The road in, and where it stops being a motorway

From Brisbane Airport this run is motorway for all but the last few kilometres. You leave the terminal precinct onto the Gateway Motorway, cross the river on the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, that is the toll on this trip, and it is already inside your quote, and skirt the eastern side of Brisbane instead of driving through the middle of it. At Eight Mile Plains the Gateway meets the Pacific Motorway and the route number becomes M1. After that it is a single road: Loganholme, Coomera, Nerang, Robina, Varsity Lakes.

The state border does not arrive where most people expect. Gold Coast Airport's main runway crosses the Queensland,New South Wales line, and at Tugun the M1 ducks into a 334 metre tunnel underneath the southern end of that runway. You go in on one side of the border and come out on the other. There is no checkpoint and nothing to see; most passengers miss it entirely.

A few minutes further south, the exit signposted Cudgen and Kingscliff puts you onto Tweed Coast Road. From there it is Cudgen Road, past the new Tweed Valley Hospital at 771 Cudgen Road and TAFE NSW Kingscliff beside it, through the red soil farm country the district is named for, Cudgen taking its name from a local word for red clay. Then the road drops into town. Marine Parade is the last street: shops and cafés along one side, Kingscliff Beach and the mouth of Cudgen Creek on the other, the Cudgen Headland surf club at the end of it, the bowls club a short walk back.

Call it roughly 120 km door to door. Ninety five minutes is a good run. Allow closer to two hours if you land into Brisbane's afternoon peak, if the M1 is stacked up behind Nerang, or if it is the Friday before a long weekend. Your driver builds that into the pickup time instead of quoting you a best case.

Two things about a Kingscliff address that catch drivers out

Cudgen Creek splits this town, and it has one road bridge. Kingscliff proper, Marine Parade, the holiday parks, the surf club, sits on the northern side. Sutherland Street carries the only road crossing, and on the far bank it becomes Casuarina Way, which is how you reach Salt Village, Casuarina and everything south of them.

That matters because Salt Village addresses are Kingscliff addresses. Bells Boulevard at Salt is postcoded 2487 and signposted Kingscliff, but it sits on the other side of the creek from the surf club. A booking that says only "Kingscliff" can mean a unit two minutes from the beach or a house on the far bank. Give us the street and the number, not the suburb.

The second trap is the holiday parks. Kingscliff has two: Kingscliff Beach Holiday Park in the middle of town, and Kingscliff North Holiday Park up the coast. "The Kingscliff holiday park" is not an address, tell us which one, and which entrance.

What a Kingscliff transfer costs

From $299 for the Lexus ES300h sedan, carrying up to three passengers. From $379 for the seven seat Mercedes, the V Class or the Executive Vito Tourer, carrying up to seven with luggage.

Both are prices for the car, not for each seat. They are from prices because the last few kilometres change the figure: Kingscliff town, Chinderah, Cudgen, Salt Village, Casuarina, Cabarita Beach and Fingal Head are all slightly different runs. Put your address in and the quote comes back before you commit.

Inside that from price: tolls including the Gateway, airport fees, GST, the meet and greet inside the terminal, flight tracking, 60 minutes of free waiting on international arrivals and 45 on domestic, and any child seats you need. No deposit, and free cancellation.

Why a pre booked car suits this run

Kingscliff has no railway station, and there is no disused one waiting to reopen either. The Murwillumbah line closed to passengers on 15 May 2004, and even when it ran it stopped at Murwillumbah, well inland of the coast, it never reached Kingscliff or Tweed Heads. Part of that corridor is now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, which is a fine thing on a bike and no help at all with four suitcases. On the Queensland side the Gold Coast line ends at Varsity Lakes and goes no further south.

So the public transport version is the Airtrain into Brisbane, a Gold Coast line train to Varsity Lakes, a bus over the border, then another bus: several hours and at least three changes, each one a chance to be left on a footpath with the kids and the bags.

Rideshare will get you out of Brisbane Airport easily enough. Whether a driver takes a 120 km one way fare into another state at 10pm is a different question, the fare is whatever the app decides at that moment, and rideshare cannot promise you a fitted child seat.

The pre booked alternative is simpler: one car, one driver, one from price agreed before you fly, and your name on a board at arrivals. Private throughout, no other passengers, no other stops.

Holiday houses, awkward driveways and early flights

A lot of Kingscliff accommodation is somebody's house. Waterfront streets at Chinderah, beach houses along Casuarina Way, apartments at Salt, older houses on the streets behind Marine Parade. These are not hotels with a forecourt and a doorman, and some are awkward for a car: a short steep driveway that scrapes a sedan, a one way street, a gate with a keypad, a unit number you cannot read from the road.

Tell us at booking. A line like "driveway too steep, park on the street" is the difference between the driver reaching your door and the driver circling the block while you watch from a balcony.

Early departures are the other Kingscliff speciality. A 6:30am flight out of Brisbane means a pickup at around 3:45 to 4:15am, and we work that back from your flight number. The driver arrives quietly and does not sit on the horn. At that hour the motorway is empty and the run north is quicker than the trip down.

Coming the other way, your driver meets you inside the terminal at arrivals holding a name board, not a phone call from a pick up bay. Sixty minutes of free waiting on international while you clear customs and collect bags, 45 on domestic. If the flight is three hours late we already know, because we are watching it.

Travelling to Kingscliff with children

Not one operator on this corridor markets that. Anyone who has carried a capsule through an international terminal and fitted it on the kerb outside arrivals, with a tired toddler and a queue of cars behind them, knows what it is worth.

Do you also go to Casuarina, Salt Village, Cabarita Beach and Fingal Head?

Yes, they are drop off points on the same run down from Brisbane Airport, and pickup points on the way back up to it. Salt and Casuarina are over the Sutherland Street bridge and south along Casuarina Way; Cabarita Beach and Norries Headland are further south again; Fingal Head, with its lighthouse and its basalt columns, is north of Kingscliff towards the border.
