Gold Coast Airport to Kingscliff: 18 km, and then you are at the beach

It is 18 kilometres from the terminal at Gold Coast Airport to Kingscliff, and we allow 16 to 22 minutes for it. The airport is in Queensland, Kingscliff is in New South Wales, and a Queensland pickup with a New South Wales drop off is exactly what our licence covers.

Short does not mean simple. The airport end is a kerb with a queue on it, and the Kingscliff end is a unit number in a resort or a driveway off a quiet street. What decides whether the trip feels easy is not the highway, it is the first five minutes and the last five minutes.

What it costs

From $89 in the Lexus ES300h sedan, up to 3 passengers. From $115 in the Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, up to 7 passengers.

Those are from prices, per car, not per person. Seven people in the V Class is one fare, not seven. Tolls, airport fees and GST are already in the number, and you get the final figure before you book.

The fleet is those two cars and nothing else: the sedan for up to three, the seven seaters for up to seven. We do not run a bus, a shuttle or a minibus, so we do not quote you a seat on one.

Why people book a car for a trip this short

There is no train. Passenger rail in the Tweed ended when the last XPT left Murwillumbah station on 15 May 2004, closing out 110 years of rail transport in the region. Two stretches of that corridor are now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek, and Lismore to Casino, lovely on a bike, no help with four suitcases.

There is a local bus. Surfside Buslines route 601 serves Kingscliff, described by Transport for NSW as "Kings Forest to Tweed Heads via Tweed Valley Hospital", a scheduled local route with stops, not a car that waits for your flight.

So the real choice on an 18 km trip is the rank or a car that is already booked. A booked car has your flight number against it, a fixed price, a driver who knows the address, and child seats fitted before you land.

At the airport

We track your flight. If it is early we are early; if it is late we move with it, and you are not charged for the delay.

Your driver meets you inside with a name board rather than texting you from a car park. You get 60 minutes of free waiting on international arrivals and 45 on domestic, which is the margin that covers a slow bag belt or a long biosecurity queue. If a bag goes missing or a pram has to be collected from oversize, call the driver and we work around it.

At the Kingscliff end

Give us the street address and, if there is one, the building and unit number. A postcode on its own is not enough to bring a car to a door, and neither is a resort name without the building.

Kingscliff sits on Cudgen Creek, not the Tweed River, the river mouth is further north at Tweed Heads, with beaches running from Cabarita in the south to Fingal Head in the north. The creek entrance has two training walls that keep the estuary permanently open to the sea, and the central foreshore was rebuilt under a $21.8 million Tweed Shire Council project, including a permanent rock wall protecting the Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club, the Kingscliff Beach Holiday Park, the Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club and the roads and property behind them.

Named drop off points in and around Kingscliff:

• Peppers Salt Resort & Spa, Bells Boulevard, Salt Village, absolute oceanfront, metres from Salt Beach. Its own listing calls it "only 15 minutes from the Gold Coast Airport"; that is the resort's marketing line, and our allowance is 16 to 22 minutes.
• Mantra on Salt Beach, 1 Gunnamatta Avenue, centrally located in Salt Village.
• Tweed Holiday Parks Kingscliff Beach, 125 Marine Parade, beachfront in the middle of town.
• Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club, 131 Marine Parade, three greens and the oceanfront Waves Function Room.
• Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club, 61 Marine Parade, established 1922. Volunteers patrol Kingscliff Beach from the first weekend of the NSW Spring holidays in late September through to the Anzac weekend in April.
• Tweed Valley Hospital, 771 Cudgen Road, Cudgen, open to patients since May 2024, a $723.3 million development with 430 beds and 42 emergency treatment spaces. The Tweed Hospital in Powell Street, Tweed Heads closed when it opened, so hospital trips now end at Kingscliff's doorstep.

Two dates worth mentioning when you book. Kingscliff Markets run in Jack Bayliss Park on Marine Parade on the second and fourth Saturday of every month, 8:00am to 1:00pm. The Kingscliff Triathlon is based at the surf club at 61 Marine Parade, the organisers list Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November 2026 and Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February 2027, with changed traffic conditions from 6:00AM until the last competitor finishes. On mornings like those we agree a meeting point the night before instead of guessing.

Roadworks, and why the last stretch is the one we plan for

Tweed Coast Road is the road between the Pacific Motorway (M1) and Kingscliff, and the access road for the whole coastal strip, Kingscliff, Cudgen, Casuarina, Cabarita, Bogangar, Hastings Point and Pottsville. Tweed Shire Council is four laning 6.1 km of it, from Morton Street at Chinderah to Grand Parade at Casuarina, including an upgrade of the M1 roundabout at Chinderah. Priority sections 5 and 6 are scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2026 and take about 18 months, and the work includes duplicating the Cudgen Creek Bridge.

One road into a strip of towns, with live works on it, is a good argument for a driver who is already watching the conditions. Our 16 to 22 minutes is the normal allowance; if there is a lane closure or an event morning, we leave earlier and tell you why.

The red paddocks on the way in are the ferrosol of the Cudgen Plateau, fertile enough to be classified as State Significant Farmland. Cudgen, Goodjing, is a Bundjalung word meaning red.

Families

Child seats are free, and they are fitted before we collect you. Every transfer, every car, at no extra cost. Tell us the ages and rough weights when you book and the seats are in and checked before you walk out of the terminal, nobody is kneeling on a kerb wrestling with a borrowed capsule.

The rest follows from that. The 60 and 45 minute free waiting windows cover the pram that comes up the oversize chute last, the seven seater carries a family of seven on one fare, and the car stops at the apartment door rather than at a rank a few streets away.

The airport is in Queensland and Kingscliff is in New South Wales, is that a problem?

No. A Queensland pickup with a New South Wales drop off is within our licence. What we cannot do is New South Wales to New South Wales, so we cannot take you on from Kingscliff to Byron Bay, about 60 km to the south. Kingscliff back to Gold Coast Airport, or to anywhere else in Queensland, is fine.

Do you charge per passenger?

No. The fare is for the car. Three people in the sedan pay the sedan fare; seven in a V Class pay one seven seat fare, not seven. All published prices are from prices for the vehicle.

What happens if our flight is delayed?

We track it and adjust. International arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting and domestic 45, measured from your actual landing, and your driver meets you inside with a name board. A delayed flight is not a reason for a surcharge.

Do we have to bring our own child seats?

No. Free fitted child seats come with every transfer, tell us how many and what ages when you book, and they will be installed and checked before we pick you up.
