Most people who fly into Brisbane and head south are going to Byron. A quieter group turns off short of it, crosses the river and lands in Brunswick Heads instead, where the fishing boats still tie up at the marina, the kids swim at Torakina, and the busiest thing on a Tuesday is the queue for fish and chips. It is about 162 km from the terminal door to Mullumbimbi Street: one unbroken run of two hours to two hours ten in a pre booked car, with no timetable to meet at either end.

The drive, and where the road actually goes

Out of Brisbane Airport the car picks up the Gateway Motorway, crosses the Gateway Bridge and joins the M1 Pacific Motorway south of the city. From there it is the long southern haul, Springwood, Beenleigh, Coomera, the Gold Coast section past Nerang and Mudgeeraba, and finally the Tugun Bypass, which dives into a 334 metre tunnel beneath the extended Gold Coast Airport runway. The state border sits inside that bypass rather than at any sort of checkpoint: roughly four of its seven kilometres are already in New South Wales. You notice only because the clock on the dash is suddenly an hour out for half the year.

South of the Tweed it stays motorway the whole way, the Chinderah to Yelgun stretch was rebuilt as dual carriageway in August 2002, the last 8.6 km into Brunswick Heads were duplicated in July 2007, and the Tweed Heads to Ballina run reached full motorway standard in December 2015. Then the Brunswick Heads exit, which is the quiet advantage of this route. The town was bypassed on 5 June 1998, so the exit is a short one, you are over the river and into the streets within a couple of minutes of leaving the motorway. No winding hinterland leg at the end, no crawl through a beachside strip.

Two numbers explain the whole trip: Brunswick Heads sits 40 km south of the Queensland border and 17 km north of Byron Bay. Coming down from Brisbane you reach it before Byron, not after.

Realistic timing: 115 to 130 minutes, two hours to two hours ten. Mid morning midweek sits at the bottom of that band; a Friday afternoon out of Brisbane, or a Saturday in the January change over weeks, pushes the top, the pinch points being Springwood to Beenleigh and the Gold Coast section when the whole coast is moving. Your driver leaves accordingly, and the from price does not move because the M1 was slow.

What the transfer costs

Why people pre book this one

Public transport out here is thin, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The last XPT left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004 and the Casino,Murwillumbah line has carried no passenger service since; sections were formally closed in September 2020 to build the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. There is no train to meet. Long distance coaches do run the highway, but on their schedule rather than yours, and being set down near an interchange at 10pm with four bags and a sleeping child is not the start of a holiday. Rideshare is not something you can hold a flight to, nothing is booked until a driver accepts it. A hire car means a counter queue after a long flight, an unfamiliar vehicle for 162 km of motorway, then a car you pay for all week to sit in a driveway.

It suits holiday house families, surfers heading for the banks at the river mouth and the breakwall, anyone going to a show at the Brunswick Picture House on Fingal Street, and grandparents flying in to see grandchildren.

Pickups, drop offs and the bits that catch drivers out

Brunswick Heads had 1,686 residents at the 2021 census, which tells you what to expect at the other end: houses and holiday parks, not a hotel with a driveway and a porter.

The three riverside holiday parks sit on three different streets, so the park name alone is not an address. Terrace Reserve is on Fingal Street, Massy Greene is at 91 Harbour Way, and Ferry Reserve is on Riverside Crescent. Send the park name and your site number and the driver goes to the right entrance first time. It is Massy Greene, not Massey, the spelling catches out map searches.

The timber footbridge that links the town to Torakina and the surf beach opened on 31 January 1937, and it is exactly what it sounds like. No car crosses it. If you are staying on the far side, the driver meets you on the town side and carries the bags over rather than circling for a road that does not exist.

Otherwise: give us the street number, plus whatever the owner told you about gates and parking. If the car cannot get in, the driver stops as close as he can and carries the bags. If you would rather meet somewhere unambiguous, the visitor centre at 7 Park Street works, and so does Hotel Brunswick at 4 Mullumbimbi Street.

At the Brisbane end, international and domestic are separate terminals, so we need your flight number to know where to stand. The early flight home

The return leg is where a booked car earns its keep. A 6:00am departure out of Brisbane means being at the terminal by 4:00, so a Brunswick Heads pickup lands around 1:45 to 2:00am. Nobody enjoys that hour, but the roads are empty and the run sits at the fast end of the range. What happens if my flight is delayed?

Nothing, from your side. We track the flight number, so the driver arrives when the aircraft does. You get 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 45 after a domestic one, timed from touchdown. If the flight is cancelled outright, so is your booking, free, any time, no deposit to lose.

Can you collect us at 2am from a holiday house for a morning flight?

Yes. Give us the flight number, and we set the pickup time off the check in cut off and confirm it before the day.

Will surfboards fit?
