Brunswick Heads sits at the mouth of the Brunswick River in Byron Shire, on the north coast of New South Wales, 17 kilometres from Byron Bay and about 40 kilometres south of the Queensland border. Brisbane Airport is 162 kilometres away, and we plan the run at 115 to 130 minutes door to terminal. The route north

Brunswick Heads is the southern terminus of the Pacific Motorway that runs down from Brisbane, so almost the whole trip is motorway from the moment we leave town. The Pacific Highway bypassed the town in 1998, which is why arriving here is a deliberate turn off the motorway rather than a drive through.

The interchange serving the town is at Tweed Street. We rejoin the M1 there and head north, crossing the border and running up through the Gold Coast. On the way the motorway passes through the Cudgen Road tunnel at Stotts Creek, the Wilsons Park tunnel at Tweed Heads South and the 334 metre Tugun Bypass tunnel under the Gold Coast Airport runway extension, which opened in June 2008. Beyond the Gold Coast the road continues to Brisbane and on to the airport.

Tweed Street and Gulgan Road are two different exits, which catches out drivers who do not know the area: Gulgan Road is the old Pacific Highway alignment, and its interchange is the one signposted for Mullumbimby. Ours is Tweed Street, off at the roundabout, follow the sign to Brunswick Heads, then straight along Tweed Street for about two kilometres into town.

For scale, the Brunswick Heads community site puts Brisbane at roughly 150 kilometres north and about one and a half to two hours by car. Our 162 kilometres and 115 to 130 minutes is measured door to terminal rather than town to city, which is why it runs a little longer.

Why a booked private car suits this trip

There is no train. The last XPT passenger service left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004, ending 110 years of rail in the region, and there has been no passenger rail in the Northern Rivers since; the corridor was formally closed in 2020 and part of it is now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, whose 23 kilometre Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek section opened in 2023 and does not reach Brunswick Heads. Public transport in the corridor is bus route 640, which Transport for NSW describes as Ballina to Mullumbimby via Byron Bay, a local service between local towns, going nowhere near Brisbane Airport.

That leaves three realistic options for a Brisbane flight: drive yourself and pay to leave the car at the airport all trip, chase a ride share at whatever hour your flight demands, or book a car in advance. We are the third: a named driver, a car you know the size of, a price agreed before the day, and a pickup time set against your flight.

We track that flight, which matters most on the way home: if the aircraft is late, the pickup moves with it. International arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting, domestic 45, and we meet you inside the terminal with a name board.

Pickup in Brunswick Heads

Most pickups are residential and we come to the door. The town is small, the 2021 Census recorded 1,905 residents and 1,125 private dwellings, so a street address is all we need.

We also pick up regularly from the holiday parks. Reflections runs three in town: Reflections Brunswick Heads on Fingal Street, Massy Greene at 91 Harbour Way on the river, and Ferry Reserve on Riverside Crescent, which has its own boat ramp with Mount Chincogan behind. Other pickups we are often asked for include Hotel Brunswick at 4 Mullumbimbi Street, Memorial Park at 11 Fawcett Street, South Beach Road by the surf club, the Brunswick Picture House after an evening show, and the North Head carpark, where the walking track into Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve starts.

Two local details shape the plan. Byron Shire Council runs pay parking in the Brunswick Heads central business district and on South Beach Road from 9am to 5pm, at $5 an hour capped at $25 a day, so a car waiting in town is a car on the meter, we would rather arrive on time than arrive early and sit. And the council commissioned a traffic study after parking concerns were raised by the public school, businesses and residents, so we leave margin around school hours. The last stretch is local streets either way, and we plan for it.

Rain is the other thing we watch. The Brunswick River drains a 22,000 hectare catchment rising from sea level at the town to 690 metres, and the council's list of major floods runs March 1974, February 1976, March 1978, June 2005, March 2017 and February,March 2022. A short steep catchment fills quickly, so in heavy weather we call and bring the pickup forward rather than let the buffer disappear.

Families and the free fitted child seats

Is $365 the price for the whole car or per person?

Per car. It is a from price for the vehicle, up to three passengers in the sedan from $365, up to seven in the seven seater from $465, with tolls, airport fees and GST already in it. There is no per head charge and no surcharge added at the end.

How early should the car collect us for a Brisbane flight?

We work backwards from your flight. The drive is 115 to 130 minutes, and we add the check in and bag drop time your airline asks for plus a buffer for the motorway. Give us your flight number and we will propose a pickup time; if you would rather leave earlier, we take the earlier time.

Can you pick us up in Brunswick Heads if we are going to Brisbane Airport?

Yes. A New South Wales pickup is fine when the drop off is in Queensland, and Brisbane Airport is in Queensland. The return leg starts in Queensland, so that works too. What we cannot do is a trip that starts and finishes in New South Wales.

What happens if our return flight is delayed?
