Brisbane Airport to Mullumbimby Transfers

Two hours south, and the last part goes inland

Most people picture the Northern Rivers as coast. Mullumbimby is not. The town sits about four kilometres west of the highway and five inland of Brunswick Heads, up the Brunswick River in cane and cattle country, with Mount Chincogan standing over it, a lava plug left by the long extinct Tweed shield volcano. The last part of the drive is the part our regulars remember: you come off the motorway, the traffic noise stops, and a few minutes later you are on Burringbar Street, the town's main street and most of its shopping in one go.

It is 174 km door to door. We allow 120 to 135 minutes and quote on the longer number, because what reliably breaks this run is Brisbane's own traffic, not the highway south.

The route, from the driver's seat

Out of the terminal we take Airport Drive onto the Gateway Motorway, cross the Brisbane River on the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, the Gateway Bridge, tolled, and stay on the M1 around the south of Brisbane. From Eight Mile Plains it is the Pacific Motorway the whole way: Springwood, Loganholme, Beenleigh, then the long Gold Coast run past Helensvale, Nerang and Robina, the Tugun Bypass with its 334 metre tunnel under the Gold Coast Airport runway extension, and the Queensland,New South Wales border there at Tugun.

In New South Wales the road keeps the M1 shield through Tweed Heads West, Banora Point and Chinderah, then Yelgun and Billinudgel. We leave the motorway near Brunswick Heads and turn inland for the last few kilometres into town.

Two things move the clock, and neither is in New South Wales: weekday afternoons between the Gateway and Springwood, and the Gold Coast stretch in school holidays. The far end adds its own. Wilsons Creek is about five kilometres out of Mullumbimby, Main Arm about fourteen, Huonbrook about seventeen, slow kilometres, not motorway ones. We build them into the quote rather than discover them at the last creek crossing.

What it costs

From $385 for the Lexus ES300h sedan, which carries up to three passengers and their luggage. From $489 for the seven seat Mercedes, the V Class or the Executive Vito Tourer, which carries up to seven.

Both are from prices, and both are per car, not per person. One fare for the vehicle, whoever is sitting in it. We say "from" for an honest reason: a house on Burringbar Street is not the same job as one up Upper Main Arm.

Why this trip in particular wants a booked car

Mullumbimby has a railway station and no trains. The Murwillumbah line ran through the town for 110 years; the last XPT left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004, and nothing has carried a passenger on that corridor since. The stretches rebuilt as the Northern Rivers Rail Trail run from Murwillumbah only as far as Crabbes Creek, north of here, and from Lismore to Casino. Good on a bike, no use from an airport.

So the do it yourself version is the Airtrain from either airport terminal into the city or down to the Gold Coast, then a long distance coach, then the last few kilometres inland, the leg nobody has solved, because the town sits about four kilometres off the highway. The last Airtrain of the day leaves the airport at 10:04pm; the first is 5:04am on weekdays, 6:04am at weekends and public holidays. Rideshare is not a plan either: no guarantee a driver at Brisbane Airport will take a two hour one way across the state border, and the fare is not fixed before you get in.

A pre booked private car removes all of it: one vehicle, one driver, your name on the board, your bags in the boot, a from price agreed before you fly. The car is yours alone, never shared, never a shuttle, never a bus.

On the licence: a Queensland pickup with a New South Wales drop off is exactly what ours permits, and the return from Mullumbimby to Brisbane Airport too. What we cannot do is New South Wales to New South Wales, so Mullumbimby to Ballina Airport is not a trip we can take.

Holiday houses, gravel drives and very early departures

A good share of the addresses around Mullumbimby are not really addresses. They are a dropped pin, a number painted on a milk can, and a driveway that starts with a creek crossing. Main Arm, Wilsons Creek and Huonbrook are full of them.

So when you book, send the pin with the street address, add any gate code, and say if the drive is steep, unsealed or narrow. The seven seat Mercedes is a long vehicle; on a tight drive we will meet you at the gate and carry the bags down rather than attempt a three point turn on wet gravel at dawn. If there are three or fewer of you, the sedan copes better with that kind of drive and we will send it instead. For four to seven the Mercedes is the only car that fits you, so the answer there is the gate, not a smaller vehicle. Better settled at booking than at 4am.

Early departures are routine here, and this run carries a trap a Gold Coast pickup does not: the border. For a 6am international out of Brisbane you want to be at the terminal by 4am, which means leaving Mullumbimby around 1:45am Queensland time, and from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, when New South Wales is on daylight saving and Queensland is not, that is a 2:45am pickup on your kitchen clock. We confirm every pickup in the time zone of the pickup address, in writing, because this hour catches people out every summer.

Coming home: the arrivals meet

On the return leg we track your flight from the moment it leaves. Your chauffeur parks and walks in, and waits at the arrivals doors with a name board, inside the building, not circling a pickup lane texting you to hurry. International arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting from touchdown, domestic 45.

Families, and the child seats nobody else advertises

Every child restraint we carry is free and fitted by the driver before we come to you: baby capsule, rear facing, forward facing and booster, as many as the vehicle has seats for. No charge, ever.

Check the competition on this corridor and you will not find another operator marketing it. Most charge per seat, or ask you to bring your own and fit it yourself in a car park with a tired toddler on your hip. Two hours is a long drive with small children, and a much shorter one when the seat is already in.

Surfboards are no trouble, tell us the board bag length and we will allocate the right vehicle. One thing worth knowing if you are booking a house sight unseen: Mullumbimby is an inland town, and the nearest beach is Torakina, inside the breakwater at Brunswick Heads.

How long does Brisbane Airport to Mullumbimby actually take?

120 to 135 minutes for 174 km. Weekday afternoons through Brisbane's southern suburbs and school holiday traffic on the Gold Coast push it to the upper end; a hinterland address adds more.

Is the price per person or for the car?

For the car. From $385 for the sedan with up to three passengers, from $489 for the seven seat Mercedes with up to seven. Tolls, airport fees and GST are already inside the from price.

What if our flight is delayed?

Nothing changes for you. We track the flight and move the pickup to the actual landing time. You get 60 minutes of free waiting after an international arrival and 45 after a domestic one.

Can you collect us from Ballina Airport instead?

No. Both ends would be in New South Wales, which our Queensland licence does not allow. Brisbane and Gold Coast airports are both fine, in either direction.

Will the car get up our driveway at Main Arm?

Often, and we would rather know in advance either way. Tell us if it is steep, unsealed or has a creek crossing. For three or fewer we can send the sedan, which copes better. For four to seven we bring the Mercedes to the gate and walk the bags in. Send a dropped pin, house numbers out there are optimistic.

There are ten of us. Do you have a bus?

We do not run buses or shuttles of any kind. Our largest vehicle seats seven, so a group of ten travels in two cars, both meeting you at arrivals. Every passenger is still in a private vehicle with a chauffeur.
