What the drive is actually like
The through road at Skennars Head is The Coast Road. Boulder Beach and Headland is addressed on Rocky Point Road, Skennars Head Reserve is on Aureus Boulevard, and the holiday parks sit on Skennars Head Road and Flat Rock Road. Those first few minutes are ordinary local streets with houses, a reserve and beach car parks on them, and they are the part of the trip easiest to underestimate. We plan for them rather than assume the whole 82 km moves at highway speed.
After that it is a straightforward run north to the border and into the airport. Fifty to sixty minutes is the honest figure for a normal day. If the road is busy at your flight time, or there is weather about, we suggest an earlier pickup rather than quietly hope for the best.
Roadworks and closures that genuinely affect this pickup
These are the live ones worth knowing about, and they are the reason we ask for your flight number and then choose the pickup time ourselves.
Ross Lane at Lennox Head is closed for about nine weeks from 19 October 2026, reopening 18 December 2026, while a new concrete bridge is built over Deadmans Creek. Around 8,400 vehicles a day use that crossing, and it serves Lennox Head plus Tintenbar, Alstonville, Wollongbar and Lismore, so that traffic has to go somewhere else for those nine weeks. If you are flying out in that window, tell us and we will build the extra time in.
Ross Lane also goes under water for one to three days at a time after heavy rain, which is the point of raising it. Until the work is done, wet weather in the days before your flight is a reason to talk to us, not a reason to hope.
The Ballina Bridges Duplication runs from 2024 to 2027, duplicating Fishery Creek Bridge on River Street and Canal Bridge on Tamarind Drive. Traffic stays at one lane in each direction while that is under way, so any part of a journey that passes through Ballina is slower than the map thinks.
And when The Coast Road was closed in November 2024 between Pat Morton Lookout and the North Creek Road roundabout, the official detour ran via Skennars Head Road and North Creek Road. Knowing the alternate way out of a locality is the difference between a delay and a missed flight.
Why a booked private car suits this particular trip
There is no passenger rail in the Northern Rivers. The last XPT left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004, ending 110 years of rail in the region, and the Casino to Bentley and Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek sections were formally closed on 23 September 2020 to become the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. There is no train to catch and there has not been for two decades.
The local bus is Blanch's Route 640, which runs Ballina to Lennox Head to Byron Bay to Mullumbimby. It passes through, but there is no stop named Skennars Head on the timetable at all, the two timing points between Ballina and Lennox Head are Bayview Drive Estate on Old Coast Road, and Headlands Drive. Nor is it a service that points towards the border.
So the realistic choices are somebody's private car, or a car you have booked. A booked car means one vehicle, one driver, one price agreed before the day, and a boot that fits your luggage because we asked how much of it there is. No bus, no shuttle, no minibus, and nothing shared with strangers.

Can you drive me to Ballina Byron Gateway Airport instead?
No, and it is not a matter of preference. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is 5 km from the Ballina CBD on Southern Cross Drive, served by Jetstar, QantasLink and Virgin Australia, and it is a perfectly good airport, but a Skennars Head pickup to a Ballina drop off starts and finishes in New South Wales, which our authorisation does not allow. Gold Coast Airport, being in Queensland, we can do.
Is $215 the total, or per person?
It is a from price for the whole car. Up to three passengers travel in the Lexus ES300h sedan from $215, and up to seven in the Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer from $275. You are booking a vehicle, not seats, and tolls, airport fees and GST are included in the quote.
Can you bring us home from Gold Coast Airport as well?
