Skennars Head is 82 km south of Gold Coast Airport, and we allow 50 to 60 minutes for the drive. Where Skennars Head actually is
Skennars Head is a coastal locality in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, 7 km from the regional centre of Ballina, inside the Ballina Shire local government area, postcode 2478. It sits on Bundjalung country. It is tucked between Ballina and Lennox Head on the coast strip, a short drive from Ballina Byron Gateway Airport, and it is small: 1,303 people at the 2021 census, median age 47. Lennox Head, immediately north, is 11 km from Ballina and 20 km from Byron Bay.
The headland gives the place its name, after John Frederick Skenner, who selected the land in the 1840s and put up one of the first sugar mills in the region in 1869, note the different spelling of the surname.
The through road is The Coast Road. Sharpes Beach car park is addressed on it, and Flat Rock Tent Park is signed as being off it. Boulder Beach and Headland is addressed on Rocky Point Road. Skennars Head Reserve, a playground in a large coastal reserve managed by Ballina Shire Council, is on Aureus Boulevard. Those are the real street names, and they are the ones we ask for when we take a booking.
Why a booked private car suits this trip
There is no passenger rail anywhere near Skennars Head. The last XPT left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004, ending 110 years of rail in the region, and the Casino,Bentley and Murwillumbah,Crabbes Creek sections were formally closed on 23 September 2020 for the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.
Public bus coverage is thin at the Skennars Head end. Blanch's Route 640, which links Ballina, Lennox Head, Byron Bay and Mullumbimby, has no stop named Skennars Head at all, the two timing points between Ballina and Lennox Head are "Bayview Drive Estate, Old Coast Rd" and "Headlands Dr". And on Sundays and public holidays only three Route 640 services leave Ballina Byron Gateway Airport northbound (7.50am, 11.10am and 2.45pm), against eight on weekdays and six on Saturdays. If your flight lands on a Sunday afternoon, the timetable is not going to meet you.
Roadworks are the other reason to have a car already booked and already tracking your flight. The Ballina Bridges Duplication project runs from 2024 to 2027, duplicating Fishery Creek Bridge on River Street and Canal Bridge on Tamarind Drive, and traffic stays at one lane in each direction while that work goes on. Separately, Ross Lane at Lennox Head is closed for approximately nine weeks from 19 October 2026, reopening 18 December 2026, so a new concrete bridge can be built over Deadmans Creek. About 8,400 vehicles a day use that crossing, and Ross Lane serves Lennox Head plus Tintenbar, Alstonville, Wollongbar and Lismore. It also goes under water for one to three days at a time after heavy rain, which is why the road is being raised.
We watch all of that. When The Coast Road was closed in November 2024 between Pat Morton Lookout and the North Creek Road / Byron Bay Road roundabout, the official detour was via Skennars Head Road and North Creek Road, that is the sort of local knowledge that keeps a transfer on time rather than stranded behind a barrier. The last stretch into Skennars Head is local roads, and we plan for it rather than hoping.

The Ballina Coastal Recreation Path runs 11.5 km in total and is easily done in sections, Sharpes Beach to Pat Morton Lookout is about 3 km one way, and Lennox Head to Pat Morton Lookout is 1.2 km. Pat Morton Lookout itself gives uninterrupted views north along the coast towards Byron Bay, with Cape Byron Lighthouse visible on clear days, and whale migration season runs May to November. Just north, Lennox Point is part of Australia's National Surfing Reserve and is known for its right hand point break, Lake Ainsworth is a freshwater lake stained amber by the surrounding Melaleuca tea trees, and Seven Mile Beach runs alongside the Lennox Head main street.

Flat Rock Tent Park is at 38 Flat Rock Road, off Coast Road, with 87 sites, all unpowered. Xavier Catholic College, the Years 7 to 12 co educational secondary school, is at 2 Redford Drive.
