The route
The run north is straightforward, which is exactly why it is worth getting right. Tweed Coast Road is the road through Pottsville; it meets Coronation Avenue in the village and runs south from there through Wooyung to Tweed Valley Way. Most departures start on it. From the village the choice is the coastal road north or the Cudgera Creek Road interchange onto the Pacific Motorway, a diamond interchange, signposted for Cudgera Creek, Pottsville and Hastings Point. That motorway is the Brisbane,Brunswick Heads Pacific Motorway, 158 km end to end, and it crosses the state border at Tweed Heads.
Which way your driver goes depends on the hour, the traffic and any roadworks running that week; we would rather make that call on the morning than promise a route in advance. What we do commit to is the timing: the last stretch at either end is local road rather than motorway, and we plan for it.
Two things matter on the coastal approach through 2026 and 2027. Tweed Shire Council is widening 6.1 km of Tweed Coast Road to four lanes, from Morton Street at Chinderah to Grand Parade at Casuarina, with the priority sections scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2026 and run about 18 months. And Council has decided the widened road will not be raised above flood level, because the area south and east of the Pacific Motorway floods at a consistent flat water level from Tweed River backwater and lifting the road would push flood levels up elsewhere. In plain terms, the coastal road stays flood liable, and in bad weather the motorway is sometimes the better answer.
Pickup in Pottsville
Pottsville is a bigger town than it looks. It recorded 7,209 residents at the 2021 Census, up from 245 in 1971, which is a lot of new streets laid over a village road layout. Pickups broadly come off two different approaches, and they are not interchangeable:
- The village and the coast road side, Tweed Coast Road and Coronation Avenue, and the addresses off them. Tweed Holiday Parks Pottsville South is at 2 Tweed Coast Road, beside Mooball Creek and a short walk from the shops; Tweed Holiday Parks Pottsville North is at 27 Tweed Coast Road, around 200 metres from the beach. They are two separate parks with two separate entrances, so please tell us which one when you book.
- The Black Rocks side, Overall Drive, which crosses Blackrocks Bridge and connects through to Philip Street and Coronation Avenue. If your address is out this way, the driver comes in on Overall Drive, not along Tweed Coast Road.
If your pickup is inside the Koala Beach estate, between Pottsville and Hastings Point, there is a 40 km/h limit throughout for the safer passage of wildlife, alongside 270 hectares of reserved bushland. Our drivers hold that limit, and we build the extra minute into the pickup time.
Two dates change the village itself. Pottsville Beach Markets run on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month in Philip Street, which changes parking and traffic around the centre. And on the Pottsville Beach Triathlon Saturday, the event runs 24 and 25 October 2026, Tweed Coast Road from Coronation Avenue through Wooyung to Tweed Valley Way is fully closed from 6.00am to 1.30pm, Overall Drive is restricted from 6.00am to 5.30pm, and traffic between Overall Drive and Coronation Avenue is detoured via Anne Street. If you are flying out that morning, tell us when you book and we will work backwards from the closures.
Why a booked car rather than the alternatives
There is no train. The last XPT left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004, ending 110 years of rail in the region, and the line from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek was formally closed on 23 September 2020. The old corridor is now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, 24 km with two tunnels, opened 1 March 2023, a fine morning on a bike and no use at all with three suitcases and a 6am departure.
The public bus is Surfside Buslines route 603, listed by Transport for NSW as Pottsville to Tweed Mall via Tweed Valley Hospital. It is a local service, not an airport service.
