Ocean Shores to Gold Coast Airport Transfers

Forty seven kilometres, and only one road

Rajah Road at half past four in the morning is one of the quietest stretches of bitumen in the Northern Rivers. That is where a lot of these trips begin: a few minutes of dark, curving hillside street, headlights sweeping the banksias, then down through Balemo Drive and onto Brunswick Valley Way, and around the roundabout to the on ramp signed for Tweed Heads.

From that on ramp there is not a single turn until the airport. Not one. The M1 Pacific Motorway carries you north past the Chinderah and Kingscliff exit, over the Tweed River and onto the Tugun bypass, a stretch that crosses the state line and dives into a tunnel beneath the end of the Gold Coast Airport runway, a runway the Queensland New South Wales border cuts straight across. You come up, take the exit signed Tugun, and drop back onto the Gold Coast Highway for the last minute or two into Terminal Drive at Bilinga.

About 47 kilometres, door to door. We allow 42 to 52 minutes, and that range is deliberate. Leave Ocean Shores before five and you are at the bottom of it. Leave at half past seven on a weekday, when the motorway north of the Tweed is carrying Gold Coast commuters, and you will use the top of it.

One thing catches people out more often than traffic ever does. From early October to early April, New South Wales is on daylight saving and Queensland is not, so your kitchen clock in Ocean Shores runs an hour ahead of the airport's. A 6:00am Queensland departure is 7:00am on your phone at home. Give us the flight number when you book and we will work the pickup back from it.

What a car from Ocean Shores costs

From $185 for the Lexus ES300h sedan, up to three passengers with luggage. From $235 for the seven seat Mercedes V Class or the Executive Vito Tourer, the right call for a family of five or six with boards, golf clubs or a fortnight's worth of bags.

Those are per car, not per person. Four adults travelling together pay the same as one does. They are from prices because the exact figure moves with where you are and when you go: a pickup up in the Orana Road streets prices a little differently to one down at South Golden Beach, and a 3:30am departure is not the same job as a 10am one.

What the from price already includes: tolls, airport fees and GST, flight tracking, the driver meeting you inside the terminal with a name board on the return leg, 60 minutes of free waiting on international arrivals and 45 on domestic, and any child restraints you need. There is no deposit, and you can cancel any time at no cost.

Why a Queensland car is allowed to collect you here

Travellers in Ocean Shores, New Brighton and Billinudgel get told no a lot. Ring a Gold Coast operator and there is a fair chance they will say they cannot cross the border to collect you. Here is the rule that matters for this trip. Our Queensland licence permits a pickup in New South Wales when the journey finishes in Queensland. Ocean Shores to Gold Coast Airport finishes at Bilinga, in Queensland, so it is squarely inside the licence. The return direction works as well: a Queensland pickup may finish in New South Wales, so Gold Coast Airport back to your door in Ocean Shores is fine too.

One thing we will never do is a journey that both begins and ends in New South Wales. Ocean Shores down to Ballina, or a run between two Northern Rivers towns, is not ours to take, however much we would like the work.

The alternatives out here are genuinely thin

There is no train. The Casino Murwillumbah line ran its last passenger service in May 2004 and has never reopened; part of the old formation, through Burringbar and Mooball, is now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, which is a fine morning's ride and no use at all for a flight.

Timetabled buses and coaches do run along this coast, but they run to their own timetable and set you down at a stop rather than at your door, and very few are built around a 6am departure from another state. Rideshare exists in theory; at 4:15am, from a hillside crescent in Ocean Shores, it is a gamble with a non refundable airfare riding on it.

Driving yourself means a 95 km round trip for whoever brings the car home, plus a parking bill if nobody does.

A pre booked car solves it by being boring. One vehicle, your party only, allocated with your name and address on it. It is the same car whether you are a family closing up the holiday house after a fortnight at New Brighton, festival goers heading home from North Byron Parklands just up the road, golfers done with the eighteen holes at Ocean Shores, or one person catching the first flight to Sydney.

Pickups on the hill, and pickups on the flat

Ocean Shores is really two places, and your driver needs to know which one you are in.

The southern half sits up on the edge of the Brunswick River catchment. It is elevated, it has the sea views, and it has streets that loop back on themselves and driveways steep enough that a seven seater is better left at the kerb than reversed up them in the dark. The northern half, out toward New Brighton and South Golden Beach, is flat and sandy and much easier to drive, right up until the address turns out to be one of three dwellings sharing a letterbox on the Marshalls Creek side.

So when you book, say the awkward part out loud. If the drive is narrow or steep, the driver parks on the street and walks up for the bags. If there is a keypad gate, we want the code or the property manager's number the night before, not at 4:20am. If the number is on a post at the road rather than on the house, tell us that too.

Coming home, the opposite problem is solved for you. We track the inbound flight, so an hour's delay out of Sydney or Melbourne is our problem rather than yours. The driver meets you inside the terminal with your name on a board, and the same one road takes you back.

Travelling with kids from the Northern Rivers

This is where the gap between us and everyone else is widest. Baby capsule, rear facing, forward facing, booster, fitted by your driver before he leaves for your address, at no charge, ever. Not a surcharge, not a per seat fee, and not "bring your own and we will help you install it in the car park at Bilinga."

No competitor on this coast markets fitted child seats as free. Ask a rideshare driver to carry a capsule up to Ocean Shores at dawn and see how that goes.

Questions we get from Ocean Shores

Can you really collect us in New South Wales?

Yes, for this trip. The licence condition is about where the journey ends, and this one ends at Gold Coast Airport in Queensland. Pickups in Ocean Shores, South Golden Beach, New Brighton, Billinudgel and Brunswick Heads are all fine when the destination is in Queensland.

How early should the car come for a 6am flight?

For a domestic departure we usually suggest a pickup around 4:00am Queensland time, which during daylight saving is 5:00am on your clock at home. For an international departure, earlier again. Tell us the flight number and we will work it back with you.

Is the price per person?

No. It is per car. From $185 covers the sedan and up to three passengers; from $235 covers the seven seater for up to seven. Adding a passenger inside a vehicle's capacity does not change the fare.

What happens if our flight lands late?

Nothing you need to manage. We watch the flight and move the driver to match it. You get 60 minutes of free waiting after an international arrival and 45 after a domestic one.

Can you fit seven of us plus surfboards?

Seven is our maximum, in the V Class or the Executive Vito Tourer, and with seven adults aboard the luggage space is genuinely full. Boards and golf bags are usually fine with five or six passengers. Mention them when you book, so the right vehicle is allocated rather than discovered at the kerb.

Do you come back the other way, airport to the house?

Yes, and it is the easier direction: a Queensland pickup may finish in New South Wales, so Gold Coast Airport to your front door in Ocean Shores, or to a rental at New Brighton, sits inside the licence. Same car, same inclusions, name board at arrivals.

Does the border slow us down?

No. There is no checkpoint and nothing to show. The only markers of it are the Hyphen, a tall bent sculpture standing in the motorway median on the state line, and the runway itself, which the border cuts straight across.
