Forty eight kilometres, and almost all of it is one road

Gold Coast Airport sits at Bilinga, and its main runway physically crosses the Queensland,New South Wales border. The Pacific Motorway interchange is about a kilometre and a half south of the terminal, just over that border at Tweed Heads West. So the drive is short on decisions: out along Terminal Drive and Eastern Avenue, a couple of minutes down the Gold Coast Highway, up the on ramp, and the M1 does the rest.

The car points south and stays there. You cross the Tweed River down at Chinderah, and then it is motorway until the exit signed Billinudgel, Ocean Shores, one sign for two places, which tells you most of what you need to know about the scale of things here. Off the ramp you are on Brunswick Valley Way, and then Orana Road and Rajah Road carry you up into the suburb. Balemo Drive, Yamble Drive, Shara Boulevarde and Kallaroo Circuit all hang off those.

About 48 km. The routing apps say 37 minutes with nothing in the way, and on a quiet Tuesday they are right; we plan on 40 to 50. What varies is the Gold Coast Highway through Coolangatta and Tweed Heads, and the Tweed River crossing, which carries the whole coast's holiday traffic through the school breaks. The last few minutes inside Ocean Shores are slow regardless: the streets wind and climb, and nobody hurries on them.

The hour that catches people out

Between the first Sunday in October and the first Sunday in April, your pickup address runs an hour ahead of the airport you are flying out of. New South Wales observes daylight saving, Queensland does not, and the border here is not some distant line, it runs through the runway. A kitchen clock in Ocean Shores and a departure board at Gold Coast Airport disagree by a full hour for half the year.

We set every pickup in the local time of the place we are collecting you from, and we state it in plain words on the confirmation. A one hour error on a 6am departure is the most common near miss here.

What the car costs

The Lexus ES300h sedan, up to three passengers, is from $185. The seven seat Mercedes, V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, up to seven passengers, is from $235. Those are per car, not per person. Two of you or three, the sedan from price is the same; at a fourth head it becomes the seven seater.

They are from prices because the exact address moves the number. A house just off Orana Road is a shorter run than one on the far side of the golf course, and Ocean Shores, South Golden Beach, New Brighton and Billinudgel all sit a few minutes apart.

Inside the quoted from price: tolls, airport fees and GST, the driver meeting you, flight tracking, waiting time, and any child seats you need. No deposit, and free cancellation. Whatever the quote says, nothing is waiting to be added at the kerb.

Getting out here any other way is genuinely awkward

Billinudgel had its own railway station once, on the Casino to Murwillumbah line. The last passenger train ran in May 2004 and nothing replaced it. The corridor is becoming the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, the Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek section is already open, which is no help at all with a suitcase.

Coaches still run the highway and will set you down near Billinudgel or Brunswick Heads, on their timetable rather than your flight's, and you still have a climb with the bags. You can usually find a taxi at the rank at Gold Coast Airport; finding one that wants to come to a dark ridge road in Ocean Shores at 4.20am is a different exercise.

To be clear about what we are: a private chauffeur service, your car, your family, nobody else in it. We do not operate a coach or a shuttle. Those are other people's services, listed because they are honestly your alternatives.

Why the driveways here are their own problem

Ocean Shores is not an old town that grew. It was laid out as a single land development from the 1970s: a holding owned by Wendell West of Washington State, backed by the American singer Pat Boone, and named after Ocean Shores in Washington. That history is why the streets curve and loop and climb instead of running on a grid, and why the addresses read Rajah, Orana, Balemo, Yamble and Kallaroo.

It also means the suburb is really two places sharing one postcode. The southern half sits up on elevated ground with sea views; the northern half is flat beachfront, running east to South Golden Beach and New Brighton and north to Billinudgel. Up on the ridges the driveways match the topography, steep, short, often shared, sometimes gravel, occasionally impossible to turn around in, and plenty of street numbers are hiding behind a hedge that has had an excellent year. Down on the flat the streets are easier but narrow, with soft sandy verges that will happily swallow a wheel.

So give us the full address and one line about the driveway: steep, shared, gate code, whatever applies. The driver will reverse in where there is room and park on the street where there is not, and will carry the bags either way.

Work departures backwards, too. A 6am flight out of Gold Coast Airport usually means a pickup near 4am, and in summer, 4am on your kitchen clock is 3am at the terminal, which is the clock the airline uses.

The return leg, and the name board

Coming the other way, we meet you inside. Gold Coast Airport runs a single terminal for both domestic and international arrivals, so there is no guessing which door: your driver stands in the arrivals hall with a name board, takes the bags and walks you to the car. No circling pickup lane, no phone call from a carpark. Flights are tracked, so a late landing moves the pickup with it, and international arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting, domestic 45.

The return run is also completely legal work for us, worth saying plainly on a cross border route. We are Queensland licensed, BHSL 258504, BEA 260412, and we may collect you in New South Wales whenever the trip finishes in Queensland. Ocean Shores to Gold Coast Airport is exactly that. We do not run trips that begin and end in New South Wales.

Families: the child seats are free, and already fitted

Baby capsule, rear facing, forward facing, booster. No charge, ever, and no "on request" fine print that turns into a fee at the kerb. The driver fits the seat before pickup, so when you walk out of arrivals at 9pm with an exhausted toddler, the seat is already in the car and correctly installed.

We have not found another operator advertising that on this run, which we have never understood, it is the thing parents ask about first, and it means you are not dragging your own capsule through the terminal. Mention prams, portacots and boards when you book and we will send the seven seater.

Holiday house families heading up to the ridge for a fortnight, golfers here for the eighteen holes at Ocean Shores Country Club, surfers going straight from the terminal to South Golden Beach, and locals with an early flight who would rather hand the 4am problem to someone else.
