Lennox Head to Brisbane Airport, private car, door to terminal
Lennox Head is a seaside village in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, in the Ballina Shire local government area, between Byron Bay and Ballina. It is not on the Tweed coast and not in Tweed Shire. Wikipedia puts the village 11 km from Ballina and 20 km from Byron Bay, and Ballina Shire's tourism site calls it "a leisurely (and very scenic) 10 minute drive north of Ballina". About 7,500 people live here.
Brisbane Airport is a different proposition. Our Lennox Head to Brisbane Airport run is 195 km, and we plan 135 to 150 minutes behind the wheel, front door to terminal kerb, a long haul transfer across a state border, and the kind of trip where a booked private car earns its keep rather than simply being nicer.
What it costs
Fares are per car, never per person, and they are from prices:

- From $545 in the Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, up to 7 passengers
Tolls, airport fees and GST are included. Four adults with luggage need the seven seater, and because the price is per car, a family of five pays for the vehicle, not per head.
Why this trip is legal for us, and why that matters
Unison Transfers is Queensland licensed: BHSL 258504, BEA 260412. Our accreditation allows a New South Wales pickup only when the drop off is in Queensland. Lennox Head to Brisbane Airport qualifies, and so does the return leg back down to Lennox Head. What we cannot do, ever, is a New South Wales pickup that ends in New South Wales, no Lennox Head to Ballina, no Lennox Head to Byron Bay, not even tacked on as a stop.
There is no plan B, and that is the honest argument for a booked car
The Northern Rivers has no passenger rail. On 15 May 2004 the last XPT train left Murwillumbah station, ending 110 years of rail transport in the region, and that line ran inland through Lismore, Bangalow and Byron Bay, it never served Lennox Head anyway. Two stretches of the old corridor are now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek and Lismore to Casino, bike paths, not a railway waiting to reopen.
Buses are run by Northern Rivers Buslines out of Lismore, whose published timetable index covers Ballina and Lismore town routes; we could not find a published Lennox Head route, and no regional timetable is built around a dawn international departure.
The road out of the village
The main road link west out of Lennox Head is Ross Lane, which Ballina Shire Council describes as "an important connection between Lennox Head, Ballina, Tintenbar, Alstonville, Wollongbar and Lismore" and an important emergency evacuation and detour road, carrying around 8,400 vehicles a day. It meets the motorway near Tintenbar, about 12 km north west of Ballina, where the highway upgrade left an entrance and exit near the old Ross Lane entrance. Lennox Head sits directly east of there.
Two things a route planning app will never tell you.
First, it floods. Council states it "has a long history of flooding at Deadmans Creek, forcing it to close during heavy rainfall events", several times a year. A $4.35 million project is raising the road to roughly 1.45 metres AHD with a new single span bridge, though Council is candid that even then it "is not possible to completely eliminate flooding at this location".
Second, that work closes the road. Ross Lane is closed for approximately nine weeks from 19 October 2026, reopening 18 December 2026. For those nine weeks the direct Lennox Head,Ballina,motorway link is shut and traffic detours. If your flight falls in that window, tell us at booking and we build the detour into the pickup time.
North out of the village the road towards Byron is Byron Bay Road, becoming Byron Street in town. Council is building a 3 m wide shared path of about 2.1 km along Byron Street, Byron Bay Road and Cooper Close, the Byron Street stage running mid November 2025 to September 2026, so expect traffic control on that approach.
On the motorway the run is straightforward. The four lane dual carriageway upgrade between Woolgoolga and Ballina was completed in December 2020, and the freeway north of Brunswick Heads has been signposted as the Pacific Motorway since February 2013, so if the road changes name on the signs mid trip, you are not lost. The one tunnel here is the twin tube tunnel under St Helena Hill, on the 17 km Tintenbar to Ewingsdale section opened 18 December 2015 at a 110 km/h limit.
Pickup, and where we actually stop
We pick up at the door. Ballina Shire Council states that "parking is in high demand in the CBD areas of Ballina, Lennox Head and Alstonville", with timed restrictions in the town centres and officers patrolling on foot and by vehicle using automatic number plate recognition, including weekends, reason enough not to leave a car in the village for a fortnight.
Regular pickup points include Reflections Lennox Head, the holiday and caravan park on the corner of Ross Street and Pacific Parade, where the patrolled beach is 100 m away; the Lennox Hotel on the main strip; and the restaurant end of the village, where Shelter and Baraka are both hatted by the Australian Good Food Guide. Holiday houses at Skennars Head, the coastal locality immediately south, are fine too.
On the return leg we track your flight, meet you inside the Brisbane Airport terminal with a name board, and give you 60 minutes of free waiting on international arrivals and 45 on domestic, so you are not paying for the queue at passport control.

How long does the drive from Lennox Head to Brisbane Airport take?
We allow 135 to 150 minutes for the 195 km run and build your pickup time backwards from your flight, not from an app's best case. Heavy rain, the Ross Lane closure between 19 October and 18 December 2026, or a peak hour arrival into Brisbane all move that.
What does it cost, and is that per person?

Can I get a train or a bus instead?
There is no train. The last XPT left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004, and that line never served Lennox Head; two sections of the corridor are now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. Northern Rivers Buslines runs the region's buses from Lismore, but we cannot point you at a published Lennox Head route.
Why not fly out of Ballina Byron Gateway Airport?
For Sydney or Melbourne you reasonably might, it is 5 km from the Ballina CBD on Southern Cross Drive, has one 1,900 m runway and moved 650,323 passengers in the year to March 2023. But Jetstar, QantasLink and Virgin fly it to Sydney and Melbourne and nowhere else. For an international connection, the drive to Brisbane and one flight beats a connection with a bag transfer in the middle.
Can you also run us to Byron Bay or Ballina while you are here?
No, and not under our accreditation. A New South Wales pickup is only permitted when the drop off is in Queensland. Lennox Head to Brisbane Airport is fine, Brisbane Airport to Lennox Head is fine, Lennox Head to Ballina is not.
Anything worth seeing before we go?
Pat Morton Lookout on Lennox Point is a five minute drive or half hour walk via the coastal boardwalk, with a carpark, public toilet and views up Seven Mile Beach, which runs north to Broken Head. Whales pass May to October and hang gliders launch off the headland's 65 m cliff. Lennox Head is a declared National Surfing Reserve whose right hand break Destination NSW calls "the stuff of legend". Lake Ainsworth looks brown from tea tree tannins rather than dirt, though Ballina Shire Council samples it for blue green algae, generally weekly between October and April, and publishes a Green, Amber or Red status. For a swim, the southern end of Seven Mile Beach near the surf club is patrolled; Lennox Point and Boulder Beach are not.
