The run from Gold Coast Airport to Brunswick Heads is one of the simplest jobs we do, and that is down to the road, not to anything clever of ours. Out of the terminal at Coolangatta you are on surface streets for a minute or two, and then the M1 has you until the very end.

Southbound it goes like this: the border at Tweed Heads, the Kennedy Drive, Sexton Hill and Minjungbal Drive interchanges through the Tweed, then Chinderah, where the motorway meets Tweed Valley Way. Chinderah is also where the limit changes, north of it the motorway is a 100 zone, and from Chinderah south, past Brunswick Heads and on to Tyagarah, it is 110. Below Chinderah you run through the Cudgen Road tunnel, past the Yelgun interchange where Tweed Valley Way meets Brunswick Valley Way, past the Billinudgel exit at Wilfred Street, and then the Brunswick Heads exit puts you onto Gulgan Road.

Seventy two kilometres, 45 to 55 minutes door to door. The motorway is the easy part and almost never what decides the number. What decides it is the end of the trip: the run in from Gulgan Road, then finding one particular address in a town where much of the accommodation sits on small riverside streets.

The hour that catches people out

If we could tell you only one thing about this route, it would be this. Between October and April, New South Wales runs daylight saving and Queensland does not. Brunswick Heads is then a full hour ahead of Gold Coast Airport, despite being under an hour's drive away.

So in January, a 6:00am departure off the board at Coolangatta means a pickup outside your door at about 5:00am by the clock on your phone, 4:00am Queensland time. People miss flights on this route for no other reason. We quote and confirm every booking in the time zone of the pickup point, and we name that time zone in writing.

What you'll pay, and what is already inside it

From $199 per car for the Lexus ES300h sedan, which takes up to 3 passengers. From $255 per car for the seven seat Mercedes, the V Class or the Executive Vito Tourer, which takes up to 7.

Those are from prices, and they are per car. The figure covers the vehicle, whether one person is in it or seven; there is no per head fare on this route. They begin at "from" because your exact pickup point moves the number, an address in the middle of Brunswick Heads is not the same job as one out towards Billinudgel.

Inside the quoted from price: the Gold Coast Airport access charge, GST, any tolls, flight tracking, the meet inside the terminal with a name board, and up to 60 minutes of free waiting on an international arrival or 45 on a domestic one. Why people book a car for this one

Brunswick Heads sits in a transport gap, and the history explains it. The branch line that once carried trains through Byron Bay and Mullumbimby ran its last passenger service in May 2004, and even when it ran, it had no station at Brunswick Heads. The nearest working railway is inland at Casino, on the main North Coast line. Coaches do run down the highway, but they are built around Byron Bay, they leave to their timetable rather than yours, and at the Brunswick end you are still beside your bags working out the last leg. Land at 9:40pm with two tired children and that is not a plan, it is a hope.

The other option is a hire car. Plenty do, then pay all week for a vehicle that sits in the driveway while they walk to the beach, the bakery, and the beer garden at the Hotel Brunswick on Mullumbimbi Street. If the trip is a holiday house, a show at the Brunswick Picture House, or a weekend built around the Old & Gold Festival and its all town garage sale, you genuinely do not need a car once you are here.

To be plain about what we are: a private chauffeured car, yours alone, direct. We do not run a bus, a shuttle or a shared van, and you are never sitting in a vehicle while the driver collects three other parties. One car, your group, your address.

Where we actually pick up in Bruns

The three big holiday parks all sit on the water rather than on a main road, which is why they are worth a word the day before: Reflections Brunswick Heads on Fingal Street, Massy Greene at 91 Harbour Way, and Ferry Reserve on Riverside Crescent. Tell us which park and, if you know it, which site, a seven seater does not want to be reversing around a full park in the dark.

Holiday houses are the other one. We ask for the full address when you book, and if the driver has not been there, he will have looked at it the day before rather than at 4am with your boot open. If a driveway is too tight or too steep for the seven seater, we say so in advance and agree a loading spot, the kerb, or something unmissable like the Visitor Centre at 7 Park Street.

The pre dawn run, and the name board coming back

The first departures out of Gold Coast Airport put people on the road from Brunswick Heads at an unsociable hour, and we do that run quietly: the driver arrives early, sends a message instead of leaning on the horn, and does not wake the street.

Coming the other way, your flight number goes into our system and we watch the actual landing time, not the scheduled one. The driver parks, walks into the terminal and stands at arrivals with a name board. You do not ring anyone, you do not hunt for a rank, and a late aircraft costs you nothing, 60 free minutes from touchdown on international arrivals, 45 on domestic, which covers the usual baggage and biosecurity wait.

Not a seat handed to you in the terminal to wrestle in yourself, and not a per seat, per journey surcharge. Look at what other operators on this coast publish and you will not find that offer.

It matters most on precisely this trip: a family landing at Coolangatta for a week on the river, two under fives, and an hour of motorway in front of them. What our Queensland licence does and does not cover

We are a Queensland licensed operator, so both directions of this route are ordinary work for us: the airport down to Brunswick Heads, and Brunswick Heads back up to the airport. What the licence does not allow is a trip that starts and finishes in New South Wales, a local hop to dinner in Byron Bay is not something we can take.

We have boards and a pram, will it all fit?

Tell us what is coming when you book. Board bags and a family's luggage belong in the seven seater with the rear seats set up for it; a sedan is the wrong car for a longboard.
