Brunswick Heads sits at the mouth of the Brunswick River, in Byron Shire, about 17 kilometres from Byron Bay and roughly 40 kilometres south of the Queensland border. Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is 72 kilometres away, and we allow 45 to 55 minutes for the drive. It is a New South Wales pickup with a Queensland drop off, which is exactly the direction our Queensland licence allows us to work.
Fares start at $199 for the Lexus ES300h sedan, carrying up to three passengers, and $255 for the Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, carrying up to seven. Those are from prices for the car, not per person, and they include tolls, airport fees and GST.
The shape of the drive
Almost all of this trip is motorway. Brunswick Heads is the southern end of the Pacific Motorway that runs up to Brisbane, so once the car is on the M1 the road north to the border is continuous motorway the whole way. There are two tunnels on the New South Wales side of that stretch, the Cudgen Road tunnel at Stotts Creek and the Wilsons Park tunnel at Tweed Heads South, and then one more on the Queensland side: the Tugun Bypass runs through a 334 metre tunnel directly under the Gold Coast Airport runway extension, which has been open since June 2008.
The part that needs local knowledge is the first few minutes, not the motorway. The Pacific Highway bypassed Brunswick Heads in 1998, so the town is no longer on a through route, every arrival is a deliberate turn off the motorway rather than a drive through. The interchange that serves the town is at Tweed Street. From the exit roundabout the road runs straight for about two kilometres into town. The next interchange along, at Gulgan Road, is the old highway alignment and is signposted for Mullumbimby; it is a different exit to a different place, and drivers who work this coast know the difference.
The last stretch into your street is ordinary town road, and we plan for it. We build the local end of the trip into the time we quote rather than treating the motorway figure as the whole job.
Why a booked car suits this trip
There is no train. Passenger rail in the Northern Rivers ended on 15 May 2004, when the last XPT left Murwillumbah after 110 years of service, and nothing has replaced it. The Northern Rivers Rail Trail now uses part of that corridor, but its completed section runs between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek and does not reach Brunswick Heads. Public transport in the corridor means Transport for NSW bus route 640, Ballina to Mullumbimby via Byron Bay, a useful local service, but not something to hang an early international check in on.
For an airport run with bags and a boarding time, a car that is already booked is the calmer option. We track your flight, so if it moves, the pickup moves with it. On the return leg we meet you inside the terminal with a name board, and we allow 60 minutes of free waiting on international arrivals and 45 on domestic, which covers the ordinary slow crawl through baggage and biosecurity without anybody watching a meter.
There is also a parking argument. Byron Shire Council operates pay parking in the Brunswick Heads central business district and on South Beach Road, 9am to 5pm, at $5 an hour capped at $25 for the day. Council has also commissioned a traffic study for the town after parking issues were raised by the public school, businesses and residents. Leaving the car at home for a week, or longer, is not the free option people assume.
Weather is worth a sentence. The Brunswick River drains a catchment of 22,000 hectares that rises from sea level at Brunswick Heads to 690 metres, so it responds quickly to heavy rain. Byron Shire Council records major floods in March 1974, February 1976, March 1978, June 2005, March 2017 and February/March 2022, and notes that future development of the town is severely restricted by a lack of flood free land. In genuinely wet weather we would rather talk to you the night before and move a pickup earlier than have you make that call at the kerb in the dark.
Pickup in Brunswick Heads
Give us the address and we will come to the door. If a landmark is easier, Hotel Brunswick at 4 Mullumbimbi Street is simple to describe and simple to find. Reflections runs three holiday parks in town, Brunswick Heads on Fingal Street, Massy Greene on Harbour Way and Ferry Reserve on Riverside Crescent, and a park pickup works best when you tell us the site number as well as the park name.
Two other pickups worth flagging when you book. The Brunswick Picture House, which reopened in March 2016, generates evening pickups, and evening jobs are easier for everyone when they are booked ahead rather than chased afterwards. And Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve, between the Brunswick Heads and Ocean Shores townships, is a separate destination from the town centre: the North Head walking track leaves from the North Head carpark and runs through coastal rainforest down to the river. If that is where you want to be collected, say so.
Some dates fill the town up. The Brunswick Heads Markets run on the first Saturday of every month, 8am to 2pm, at Memorial Park, 11 Fawcett Street. The Old and Gold Festival takes over Memorial Hall, Banner Park and the school on the Saturday of the June long weekend. The Brunswick Heads Woodchop, running since 1928, is held in January, which is also peak transfer season on this coast. On days like those, an extra few minutes of margin is worth having.
Families, and the free fitted child seats

Beach plans are worth mentioning for the return trip. Brunswick Surf Life Saving Club, formed in 1935, is based on South Beach Road and patrols on weekends and public holidays from September to April. Torakina Beach sits inside the breakwater at the river mouth, while the open surf beach runs south from the town. They are different drop offs; name the one you mean.

How long does the transfer take?
We allow 45 to 55 minutes for the 72 kilometres between Brunswick Heads and Gold Coast Airport. Almost all of it is motorway, so the variation is in the local ends and the traffic on the day rather than the highway.
Is the fare per person or per car?
Per car. From $199 for the Lexus sedan, up to three passengers; from $255 for the Mercedes seven seater, up to seven. One fare for the car, however many of you there are. Tolls, airport fees and GST are included, and prices are from prices, so confirm yours when you book.
Can you pick us up in Brunswick Heads and take us to Byron Bay or Ballina?
No. Our Queensland licence lets us pick up in New South Wales only when the drop off is in Queensland. Brunswick Heads to Gold Coast Airport is fine. Brunswick Heads to anywhere else in New South Wales is not, and we will say so rather than take the booking.
Do you charge for child seats?
