Gold Coast Airport sits in Bilinga, Queensland, about 90 km south of Brisbane, and its main runway crosses the Queensland,New South Wales border. Bangalow is in the Byron Shire in New South Wales, 14 km south west of Byron Bay and 24 km north of Ballina, about 55 m above sea level on Byron Creek. So this is a Queensland pickup with a New South Wales drop off, exactly the direction our licence allows. We hold Queensland BHSL 258504 and BEA 260412.
The route
You leave the terminal, head south on the motorway, cross the state border and stay on the highway for most of the run. North of Bangalow the motorway passes through the St Helena Tunnel at Ewingsdale, 434 metres, opened 18 December 2015, two lanes northbound and three southbound. The highway then bypasses Bangalow on the eastern side of the township, along a 3 km bypass opened as a single carriageway in December 1994 and duplicated by 10 December 1997.
Because the highway goes around the town rather than through it, the last part of every Bangalow transfer is local road and village street. It is short, it is slow, and we plan for it rather than treating the trip as finished at the off ramp. Visit NSW describes Bangalow as 15 minutes inland from Byron Bay, and that is the character of the place: a hinterland village on a creek, with no coastline and no surf at the end of the street.
What the transfer costs
From $249 for the Lexus ES300h sedan, which carries up to three passengers, and from $319 for the Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, which carry up to seven. Why people book the car in advance
There is no train. Passenger rail in this region ended on 15 May 2004, when the last XPT left Murwillumbah after the NSW Government closed the Casino,Murwillumbah line in April that year. Bangalow had a station on that line and has not had a train since. The Northern Rivers Rail Trail built along parts of the corridor has not reached Byron Shire either; Byron Council only voted in February 2026 to complete its own stretch.
Public transport to Bangalow is a regional bus: route 610, Lismore to Byron Bay via Bangalow, run by Buslines Group, plus the 641X express via Bexhill and Clunes. Locals use it, but it is a bus between country towns, not an airport service, and it will not be waiting for a delayed flight with your pram and four bags.
The closer airport is Ballina Byron Gateway, about 20 minutes from Bangalow, but Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia fly there direct from Sydney and Melbourne only. International arrivals and most other domestic routes land at Gold Coast instead.

One thing to set your watch by: Gold Coast Airport runs on Queensland time, AEST, all year, and Queensland does not observe daylight saving. New South Wales does, clocks go forward on Sunday 4 October 2026 and back on Sunday 4 April 2027, and between those dates Bangalow is one hour ahead of the airport. Where we drop you in Bangalow
Bangalow is a small place, 2,260 people at the 2021 Census, up 33.8% on 2016, and village streets are narrow and often busy at the hours visitors arrive. We take the address you give us and set down as close to the door as the street allows.
A few days a year the main street cannot be used at all. On Bangalow Billycart Derby day, Byron Street is closed between the Granuaille Road roundabout and the Ashton Street intersection from 6am to 5pm, with traffic diverted along Deacon Street; the derby runs on Sunday 17 May 2026 and again on 16 May 2027. The Bangalow Market takes the showground on the fourth Sunday of each month, 8am to 2.30pm with 320 plus stalls; the Farmers Market runs in Piccabeen Park off Deacon Street every Saturday 7 to 11am; and the Bangalow Show fills the Market Street showgrounds on 13 to 14 November 2026. Weather is the other variable. Byron Shire Council's draft Bangalow Flood Study describes riverine flooding from Byron Creek, fed by Paddys Creek and Maori Creek, as deep, fast moving water posing the greatest risk to property, safety and access routes. On 13 March 2026 the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 115 mm at Byron Bay over four hours from 9am and 117 mm at Coopers Shoot during flash flooding that affected Bangalow, and council had closed Bangalow Road at the bridge between Coopers Shoot Road and Arrow Head Lane that January. When conditions look like that, we add buffer and take the road that is open.
