Where Bangalow sits, and why the airport matters
Bangalow is an inland village in the Byron Shire, 14 km south west of Byron Bay and 24 km north of Ballina, sitting at about 55 metres of elevation on Byron Creek. Visit NSW puts it 15 minutes inland from Byron Bay, just under eight hours' drive north of Sydney and a two hour drive south of Brisbane. At the 2021 Census the town had 2,260 residents, up nearly 34 per cent on 2016, a small place that has grown quickly.
The closest airport is Ballina Byron Gateway, about 20 minutes away, but it is served only by Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia flying direct to Sydney and Melbourne. Anything beyond that means Gold Coast Airport or Brisbane. Gold Coast Airport's entrance is at Bilinga, roughly 90 km south of Brisbane, with a main runway that crosses the Queensland,New South Wales border.
There is no rail option to fall back on. Passenger rail in this region ended on 15 May 2004, when the last XPT left Murwillumbah after the State Government closed the line that April. Bangalow had a station on that line. Public transport through town today is the regional bus: route 610, Lismore to Byron Bay via Bangalow, run by Buslines Group, plus the 641X express via Bexhill and Clunes. It is a local service, not an airport service.
So the realistic choices are: drive yourself and pay to park for the length of your trip, ask someone for a two hour round trip, or book a car.
What the drive is like
The Pacific Highway bypasses Bangalow on the eastern side of the township, so the motorway traffic does not run down the main street. North of town the road passes through the St Helena Tunnel at Ewingsdale, 434 metres long, opened on 18 December 2015, carrying two lanes in the northbound direction you will be travelling.
The first and last few minutes are the variable part: local streets at the Bangalow end, airport approach roads at the other. We plan for that rather than treating the whole 99 km as open road. The 60 to 70 minute figure is the realistic door to door range, not a best case with nothing in the way.
Weather is the honest wildcard. Byron Shire Council's draft Bangalow Flood Study describes riverine flooding from Byron Creek, fed by Paddys Creek and Maori Creek, as deep, fast moving water posing the greatest risk to property, safety and access routes, and the study was calibrated against the 2016, 2017 and 2022 events. The rain arrives quickly: on Friday 13 March 2026, localised flash flooding hit parts of Byron Shire including Bangalow, with the Bureau of Meteorology recording 115 mm at Byron Bay in four hours from 9am and 117 mm at Coopers Shoot. Roads close too, on 9 January 2026 the council closed Bangalow Road at the bridge between Coopers Shoot Road and Arrow Head Lane, advising motorists to use an alternate route and check Live Traffic NSW. Neither is a prediction about your travel day. Both are why we leave room in wet weather instead of cutting the timing fine.
The clock changes, and your flight does not
Gold Coast Airport operates on Queensland time, AEST, all year round. New South Wales daylight saving starts on Sunday 4 October 2026 and ends on Sunday 4 April 2027, and Queensland does not observe it. For those six months Bangalow is an hour ahead of the airport. It is an easy mistake to make in either direction, and we set pickup times in your local time with the flight's Queensland time already worked out, so there is nothing for you to convert.
Pickup in Bangalow
We come to your address, and a residential driveway is the easiest set down there is. Named addresses in town that work as pickup points include the Bangalow Hotel at 1 Byron Street (a pub, not accommodation, its own site lists no rooms), Bangalow Guesthouse at 99 Byron Street, an early 1900s heritage property with four rooms, three cottages and an apartment, and the A&I Hall at 3 Station Street, where there are two accessible parking spaces at the front of the building and ramps to all areas.
A handful of dates each year make the main street unusable. The Bangalow Billycart Derby runs down Byron Street each May, the 2027 event is set for 16 May, with scrutineering from 7am and racing from 9am, and for it the council closes Byron Street between the Granuaille Road roundabout and the Ashton Street intersection from 6am to 5pm, diverting traffic along Deacon Street. (The derby began in 1994/95 as a celebration of the bypass and is run by volunteers from the Bangalow Lions Club.) The Bangalow Market fills the showground from 8am to 2.30pm on the fourth Sunday of every month, with more than 320 stalls and $2 parking on site. The Bangalow Farmers Market runs Saturdays 7 to 11am at Piccabeen Park off Deacon Street. The Bangalow Show, held since 1897, runs Friday 13 and Saturday 14 November 2026 at the showgrounds on Market Street. On any of those days we agree a set down point away from the closure and allow extra minutes.
Families travelling with small children

Piccabeen Park on Deacon Street, with its two playgrounds, toilets and rotunda, is a good place to let children run before an hour in the car. One correction while we are on it: the weir wall there failed in 2010 and was replaced with a fish ladder rather than rebuilt, so despite what some listings still say, there is no swimming weir.

Is $249 per person or for the whole car?
For the whole car. The Lexus ES300h takes up to three passengers, and three people travelling together pay the one fare between them. The seven seat V Class or Executive Vito Tourer starts at $319 and carries up to seven. Both are from prices, and both already include tolls, airport fees and GST.
Can you take me to Ballina Byron Gateway Airport instead?
No. Our licensing allows a New South Wales pickup only when the drop off is in Queensland. Bangalow to Ballina is New South Wales to New South Wales, so it is not a trip we can take. Bangalow to Gold Coast Airport, or Gold Coast Airport back to Bangalow, are both fine.
Is this a shuttle?
No. It is a private car booked for you alone, no other passengers, no other stops, no waiting for a vehicle to fill. The bus through Bangalow is route 610, a regional Buslines service between Lismore and Byron Bay, and it is nothing to do with us.
What if my flight is delayed on the way home?
We track it. Pickup is adjusted to the actual landing time, and your driver meets you inside the terminal with a name board rather than texting from a car park. International arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting time, domestic 45.
When should the car collect me?
We work backwards from your flight, using the airline's own check in cut off and the 60 to 70 minute drive, and add margin for weather or a known closure. Between 4 October 2026 and 4 April 2027, remember the airport is an hour behind Bangalow, we do that conversion for you when we confirm the time.
