The drive: 187 km, and the exit after Byron's
Brisbane Airport to Bangalow is about 187 km door to door, and we allow 130 to 145 minutes. The shape of the run is simple: Airport Drive out of the terminal precinct, the Gateway Motorway south over the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, and on until the Gateway meets the Pacific Motorway at Eight Mile Plains. After that it is one road, Loganholme, Beenleigh, Coomera, Nerang, Varsity Lakes, then the Tugun Bypass, which runs under the Gold Coast Airport runway, and across the border at Tweed Heads.
The New South Wales half is the better half to be a passenger for: the Tweed River at Chinderah, the Yelgun exit, the Brunswick Heads turn, and then Ewingsdale, where most of the traffic peels off for Byron Bay. We stay on the motorway for the next interchange south, about six kilometres further on, which is Bangalow's own. From there it is Granuaille Road down past the showground and into Byron Street, where the Bangalow Hotel is.
If your address is in the hills instead, Coopers Shoot, Possum Creek, Newrybar, Binna Burra, Nashua or Federal, we turn before the village and climb, and that adds time.
Two things stretch the run, and neither is the open highway: the weekday morning peak where the Gateway feeds into the Pacific Motorway at Eight Mile Plains, and the Gold Coast stretch around Nerang and Varsity Lakes on a weekday afternoon or a Friday in school holidays. We build that in rather than hope.
And one thing catches people every year. From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, New South Wales runs daylight saving and Queensland does not, so Bangalow is an hour ahead of Brisbane Airport for half the year. We work both clocks and confirm the pickup in Bangalow local time, in writing.

Why people book this one ahead
Bangalow sits about 14 km inland from Byron Bay, up off the coast, and public transport out this way is thin. The do it yourself version is the Airtrain into Brisbane, a coach down the coast, and then something for the last stretch inland, three legs and most of a day, and the last one is exactly the leg that falls over on a Sunday evening with surfboards and a pram. Rideshare is a gamble on a run this long, too: you are asking a driver at the airport rank to commit to more than two hours and a border crossing.

Mobile coverage in those valleys is patchy, so we want the details before the driver leaves Brisbane, not a phone call from a dead spot.
When you book, send the dropped pin plus a line of plain English: which side of the road, what the gate looks like, whether the drive is sealed. The sedan and the V Class both handle gravel and a decent incline. One more local thing worth telling us. The Bangalow Market runs at the showground on the fourth Sunday of the month, and the showground sits on the road we come in on from the interchange. If your drop off is in the village on a fourth Sunday, say so when you book and we will allow for it.
Early departures are the other Bangalow specialty. A 6am flight out of Brisbane means leaving Bangalow around 3am, and we take that booking regularly, weddings finishing, holiday house checkouts, families heading home at the end of summer. The driver arrives early, lights off, and does not lean on the horn at three in the morning.
At the airport end
On the inbound leg the driver parks, walks into the terminal and waits at arrivals with a name board. No hunting for a car park or a rank.
