It is 187 km from Bangalow to Brisbane Airport, and we plan 130 to 145 minutes for the drive. Visit NSW describes Bangalow as 15 minutes inland from Byron Bay and a two hour drive south of Brisbane, the right mental picture: a long highway run with a short local beginning and a busy airport end.
Bangalow sits in the Byron Shire at an elevation of 55 m, 14 km south west of Byron Bay and 24 km north of Ballina. The motorway bypasses the township on its eastern side, so the main street is not a through road and the town is reached by its own interchange. North of Bangalow the motorway passes through the St Helena Tunnel at Ewingsdale, 434 metres long, opened on 18 December 2015. From there the road runs into Queensland and on to the airport. The middle of this trip is motorway. The first and last few minutes are the parts that vary, and we plan for them.

What we cannot do is a trip that starts and finishes inside New South Wales, so no Bangalow to Byron Bay, Ballina or Lennox Head, not as a trip, not as a stop along the way.
What it costs
From $415 for the Lexus ES300h sedan, which carries up to three passengers, and from $525 for a seven seat Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, which carries up to seven. Those are from prices for the whole car, never per person. Tolls, airport fees and GST are inside the figure we quote you.
There is nothing else in the fleet, no bus, no shuttle, no minibus. Five adults with luggage means the seven seater, and one fare covers the car, so the cost per head falls as the group grows and everyone arrives together rather than in a convoy.
Why a booked private car suits this trip
There is no train. Passenger rail in this region ended on 15 May 2004, when the last XPT left Murwillumbah; the NSW Government had closed the line that April after advising it was unprofitable to keep running services. Bangalow and Byron Bay both appear as stops on that closed Casino,Murwillumbah line, which is why a village this size still has a disused rail corridor and a Station Street through the middle of it.
What exists instead is a regional bus. Route 610, "Lismore to Byron Bay via Bangalow", is operated by Buslines Group, along with the 641X express via Bexhill and Clunes. That is public transport between country towns, not an airport service, and was never meant to be one.
The nearest airport, Ballina Byron Gateway, is about 20 minutes away and is served by Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia with direct flights to Sydney and Melbourne only. Useful for those two cities. Flying anywhere else in Australia, or overseas, and you are very likely departing from Brisbane, which is how a 187 km transfer becomes the ordinary way a Bangalow trip begins.
Bangalow recorded 2,260 residents at the 2021 Census, up 33.8% on 2016. It is a village, not a city, and a booked car takes the question of what might be available at four in the morning off the table.
The pickup
We collect from homes, holiday houses and the named places in town. The Bangalow Hotel is at 1 Byron Street, a pub, with no accommodation of its own, so check which building a "staying at the hotel" message actually means. Bangalow Guesthouse is at 99 Byron Street, an early 1900s heritage property with four rooms, three cottages and an apartment. The A&I Hall, built in 1911, is at 3 Station Street and has disabled access, ramps to all areas and two parking spaces at the front of the building; those front spaces are the set down point we aim for with a passenger who has mobility needs, subject to what is free on the day. Heritage House, the historical society's museum, is on the corner of Ashton and Deacon Streets.
Some days the main street is not available, and we plan around those rather than discover them. The Bangalow Billycart Derby runs on Byron Street on Sunday 17 May 2026, hosted by the Bangalow Lions Club, with races from 9am; Byron Street closes between the Granuaille Road roundabout and the Ashton Street intersection from 6am to 5pm, traffic diverted along Deacon Street. The Bangalow Farmers Market runs Saturdays 7 to 11am in Piccabeen Park off Deacon Street, and the Bangalow Market takes over the showground on the fourth Sunday of each month, 8am to 2.30pm, with 320 plus stalls. The Sample Food Festival fills the showground in September, and the Bangalow Show runs Friday 13 and Saturday 14 November 2026 on Market Street. On those days we agree a set down point clear of the crowd and leave earlier.
Weather is the other local variable. Byron Shire Council's draft Bangalow Flood Study describes riverine flooding from Byron Creek and its tributaries, Paddys Creek and Maori Creek, as deep and fast moving water posing the greatest risk to property, safety and access routes. On Friday 13 March 2026 localised flash flooding hit parts of Byron Shire including Bangalow, with the Bureau of Meteorology recording 115 mm at Byron Bay over four hours from 9am. Council also closes local roads at short notice: on Friday 9 January 2026 it closed Bangalow Road at the bridge between Coopers Shoot Road and Arrow Head Lane, advising an alternate route and Live Traffic NSW. That was one notice on one day, not a standing condition, but it is the sort of thing that happens here, so in heavy rain we add buffer and check the road before we set out.
Families, and the free fitted child seats
Fitted child seats are free on every transfer, capsules, convertible seats and boosters, installed and checked by your driver before you get in. You do not pay extra for them and you do not drag your own through an airport. Tell us the ages when you book and the right seats are already in the car. For a family of five or six, the seven seater with two seats fitted still leaves real luggage room, and it is still one fare.
Piccabeen Park on Deacon Street has two playgrounds, toilets and parking if you want somewhere to let children run before a long day. Note: the weir wall there failed in 2010 and was replaced with a fish ladder, so there is no swimming weir any more.

Is Brisbane Airport on a different time to Bangalow?
For part of the year, yes. Queensland does not observe daylight saving. NSW daylight saving begins on Sunday 4 October 2026 and ends on Sunday 4 April 2027, and during that period NSW clocks sit one hour ahead of Queensland. Your flight time is Brisbane time. We quote the pickup in Bangalow time and confirm both in writing, so nobody is doing the subtraction at 4am.
Can you legally pick me up in Bangalow?
In this direction, yes. Our licence allows a New South Wales pickup when the drop off is in Queensland, so Bangalow to Brisbane Airport is fine, and so is Bangalow to the Gold Coast. A trip that starts and ends inside New South Wales is not something we can do, so we cannot add a Byron Bay, Ballina or Lennox Head leg to this booking.
What happens if my flight is late?
We track the flight and move the pickup to the actual landing time. Arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting on international flights and 45 minutes on domestic, counted from when you land, and your driver meets you inside the terminal with a name board.
How much luggage can you take?
The sedan takes up to three passengers with their bags; the seven seaters take up to seven. Prams, golf clubs, surfboards and oversized cases are all things we carry, tell us at booking so we send the right car.
Is the price per person or for the car?
For the car. From $415 in the sedan and from $525 in the seven seater covers the vehicle, the driver, tolls, airport fees and GST. It does not change because a fourth person joins you, up to the seat count of the car you booked.
How far ahead should I book?
