The terminal doors are at Bilinga, in Queensland. But the airport does not stop at the state line: its land extends across the border into Tweed Heads West, and the main runway itself crosses from one state into the other. Some of the ground your aircraft rolls along is New South Wales.

For a Tweed traveller that is a strange kind of luck: the terminal is close enough to be a short drive, yet the trip there is complicated in ways that have almost nothing to do with distance. We drive it most days; here is how it works.

The two ways in, and why your driver picks on the morning

Bilinga sits about 2.8 km north west of Coolangatta, and Coolangatta's Boundary Street is the border, the road running inland from the Point Danger headland along the ridge, New South Wales on one side of it and Queensland on the other. So from the Tweed Heads waterfront around Wharf Street and Jack Evans Boat Harbour, the terminal is only a few kilometres off. From Banora Point, Tweed Heads South or up above Terranora Creek it is further. On this run the traffic matters far more than the kilometres.

Over the top. Boundary Street past the Captain Cook Memorial lighthouse at Point Danger, Duranbah below you on the New South Wales side, Rainbow Bay on the Queensland side, then down into Coolangatta and onto the Gold Coast Highway, which runs through Bilinga along the airport frontage. The prettiest ten minutes in the region at sunrise. Also hopeless at 10am in January, and worse again in early June, when Cooly Rocks On fills the Coolangatta strip with hot rods.

Around the back. Kennedy Drive or Minjungbal Drive onto the M1 Pacific Motorway, north over the border on the Tugun Bypass. The part worth knowing: the bypass runs through a 334 metre tunnel directly underneath the Gold Coast Airport runway. On the way to your flight you drive under the strip you are about to take off from. The bypass meets the Pacific Highway about a kilometre north of the Kennedy Drive interchange at Tweed Heads West, and it is reliably quicker whenever Coolangatta is choked.

One thing your driver carries in their head: that tunnel is closed overnight for maintenance from time to time, and while it is shut the traffic goes back around through Coolangatta on the Gold Coast Highway. The closures lift at 5am, which is precisely when a first flight out pickup is on the road.

The other pinch point is the Boyds Bay Bridge over Terranora Creek, where the highway meets Kennedy Drive. Close to 30,000 vehicles a day cross it, and if you are in Banora Point or Terranora that bridge sits between you and the airport whichever route your driver takes.

So we do not hand you a headline travel time and hope, we work backwards from your flight, allowing for the bridge, the tunnel and the strip.

The clock, not the kilometres, is what misses flights

From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, New South Wales runs daylight saving and Queensland does not. Gold Coast Airport runs on Queensland time all year round.

So for half the year Tweed Heads sits an hour ahead of a terminal you can nearly see from Point Danger, and the airport is formally in two time zones at once. During daylight saving an aircraft can push back from the gate on Queensland time and leave the ground a minute later in New South Wales time.

Your boarding pass is printed in Queensland time. Your kitchen clock is not. That is the most ordinary way a Tweed local misses a flight, and it costs thirty seconds to rule out: give us the time with the state attached, and your driver will confirm it back.

Why a booked car, rather than working it out on the day

There is no train to this terminal. The Gold Coast heavy rail line does not reach the airport. An extension has been studied for years, the Tugun Bypass even built a roof slab into that tunnel so a rail line could one day be threaded under the runway without interrupting flights, but until it exists, rail is not an option from Tweed Heads.

That leaves a bus with a state border in the middle of it, or rideshare. A route bus or a coach is a perfectly sensible answer if you are travelling light in the middle of the day, and we will say so. At 4:30am in Banora Point with two suitcases and a pram it is not, rideshare at that hour is a coin toss, and almost nobody turns up with a child seat.

A booked car removes the question: a fixed time, a named driver, a car already outside when you open the front door.

Getting the car to your actual door

• Steep driveways. Banora Point and Terranora are full of blocks cut into the hill, with driveways that drop away sharply or turn back on themselves. Tell us at booking and the driver parks on the flat and walks the bags down, instead of three point turning at 5am.
• Battle axe blocks and gated complexes. Plenty of Tweed Heads West and Tweed Heads South addresses sit behind another house or a boom gate. Give us the code, or a "meet me at the letterbox" instruction.
• Early departures. We are outside five minutes early with the boot open. No horn, no phone call at 4:20am, a text when we arrive, and we wait.
• The way home. Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board. We track the flight, so a delay is our problem rather than yours, and you get 60 minutes of free waiting on international arrivals and 45 on domestic.

Travelling with children

What time should the car arrive for a 6am flight?

For a 6am domestic departure we usually collect between 4:15am and 4:35am depending on your suburb, putting you at the terminal a little over an hour before the flight. For an international departure we start an hour earlier again, so you have the two hours the airlines ask for. Give us that time in Queensland time.

Which time zone is my pickup time in?

Queensland time, the one your boarding pass uses. Between October and April your clock in Tweed Heads is an hour ahead of it, so say the time with the state attached when you book and your driver will read it back.
