The border at Tweed Heads is a suburban street. Boundary Street is the line: Coolangatta on one side, Tweed Heads on the other, and the Twin Towns Services Club sitting right on it, front door on Wharf Street in New South Wales, car park entered from Boundary Street on the Queensland side. Out at Point Danger, where the Captain Cook Memorial Lighthouse stands, the same line runs down to the sea. Cross it and you are in Queensland. Stay south of it and you are in New South Wales, which is where a lot of Gold Coast chauffeur companies stop returning calls.

The road: about 107 km, 78 to 90 minutes

From most Tweed Heads addresses it is about 107 km to Brisbane Airport, and 78 to 90 minutes in ordinary traffic.

Your driver joins the M1 Pacific Motorway at Minjungbal Drive or Kennedy Drive, the two Tweed Heads South interchanges. If you are over at Tweed Heads West or up the hill at Terranora, the car crosses Boyds Bay Bridge over Terranora Creek first. That bridge is the road link between that side and Tweed Heads proper, close to thirty thousand vehicles a day across it, and there is no convenient second crossing to fall back on.

Those two interchanges are worth knowing about. Kennedy Drive and Minjungbal Drive are both named in the M1 upgrade planning package funded in the 2026 to 27 New South Wales budget, alongside Darlington Drive at Banora Point. That money buys modelling and concept design, not construction, so the pinch points stay exactly as they are for now.

A few minutes north and you are in the Tugun tunnel, 334 metres of it, running underneath the Gold Coast Airport runway extension. First time visitors find this odd: the nearest airport is minutes from the house and you drive straight under it. Gold Coast Airport's route network is far smaller than Brisbane's, so a great many itineraries only work out of BNE.

After that it is one road. Currumbin, Palm Beach, Burleigh, the Robina and Nerang exits, Coomera, Yatala, Loganholme. At Eight Mile Plains you stay on the M1 and it is the road underneath you that changes: the Pacific Motorway becomes the M3 into the city, while your route carries on as the Gateway Motorway. Over the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, past the Murarrie toll point immediately south of them, and in to the terminal. That toll sits inside the price you were quoted, so it never turns up as a line item afterwards.

Two things move the clock. Weekday mornings into Brisbane thicken at the Gateway end from around seven, and school holidays load up the motorway through the northern Gold Coast. We build both into the pickup time rather than discovering them at Loganholme.

The daylight saving trap. From October to April, Tweed Heads runs on New South Wales daylight saving time and Brisbane Airport does not. Phones near the border flip between the two without asking, sometimes in the same street. Every pickup time we confirm is written in Tweed local time and checked against the Queensland departure time printed on your ticket. An hour is exactly the size of error that costs someone a flight.

Those are from prices, and they are per car rather than per person: the same vehicle costs the same whether two of you travel in it or five. They start at "from" because Tweed Heads is not one address. A pickup near Jack Evans Boat Harbour is a shorter run than one from Bilambil Heights, Terranora or Fingal Head, so give us the street address and we will confirm your number in writing before you book.

Why people out here book a car in advance

Honestly, the alternatives from Tweed Heads are thin. There is no railway line here. The nearest station is Varsity Lakes, the end of the line; the corridor on south of Robina towards Tugun and Gold Coast Airport has been preserved since 2008 but has never been built. So you need a lift before your journey even begins. From Varsity Lakes the timetabled run to Roma Street is about 83 minutes, and the airport leg adds roughly another twenty five. None of it moves in the small hours either: the first Airtrain of the day leaves Brisbane Airport at 5:04 am on weekdays and 6:04 am at weekends and public holidays, which tells you what is running at four in the morning when the early departures go. A coach is the other option, and slower again.

Driving yourself hands you Brisbane Airport parking charges for the length of the holiday, plus a 107 km drive home after a long haul flight. Rideshare at 4:30 am, for a long one way run out of a small market, is a lottery. A pre booked private car is a named driver, a known time and a price confirmed in writing before you travel, and it is never shared.

Pickups, driveways and 3:30 am starts

Tweed Heads has a lot of streets laid out well before anyone owned a seven seater: the switchback driveways up at Terranora and Bilambil Heights, the tight canal cul de sacs around Tweed Heads South, the older blocks off Kennedy Drive where a van cannot turn around, the holiday houses out at Fingal Head. Tell us the address when you book and the driver will have looked at it beforehand. If the sensible move is meeting at the top of the drive, or on the flat around the corner, you hear that the evening before, not at 4:15 am with bags in your hands. For apartments along Wharf Street or around Jack Evans Boat Harbour, we meet you at the ground floor entrance.

Early departures are the norm here. A 6 am flight from Brisbane, with bag drop closing 45 minutes out, means leaving Tweed Heads around 3:30. Your driver confirms by text the evening before, arrives about ten minutes early and waits quietly. Nobody rings a doorbell at 3:20 if you asked for a text instead. Holiday house neighbours notice these things.
