Suffolk Park is a suburb of Byron Bay in the Byron Shire, five kilometres south of Byron Bay itself, with a population of 4,222 at the 2021 Census. It sits on the coast: Tallow Beach, which runs 7.6 km from Cosy Corner at Cape Byron south to Broken Head, lies adjacent to the suburb, and the beach runs parallel with Alcorn Street. The main shops are on Clifford Street. It is a village, not a resort strip.
Why a booked private car suits this trip
There is no train. Passenger rail to this part of the Northern Rivers ended on 15 May 2004, when the last XPT left Murwillumbah station, and the Casino to Bentley and Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek sections were formally closed on 23 September 2020 to make way for the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. A short three kilometre section of the old line still carries the Byron Bay Train, widely considered the world's first solar powered train, but it runs inside Byron Bay and goes nowhere near an airport.
Public transport through the village is bus route 640, described by its operator CDC NSW as "Mullumbimby to Ballina via Byron Bay, Suffolk Park & Lennox Head". It does not go to Brisbane.
There is also no airport in Byron Bay. The Byron Visitor Information Centre puts Ballina Byron Gateway Airport about 30 minutes' drive from Byron Bay and Gold Coast Airport about 40 minutes. Ballina Byron Gateway is owned and run by Ballina Shire Council and sits 5 km from the Ballina CBD; the "Byron" in its name was added when the airport was renamed in 2005. Brisbane is the longer run, and on 182 km with luggage and a departure time attached, a car that is booked, tracked and holds your bags the whole way is the simple version.
The drive
The run is north into Queensland on the motorway. The road through this stretch is the 17 kilometre Tintenbar to Ewingsdale upgrade of the Pacific Highway, which carries the St Helena Tunnel, 434 metres of twin tube under St Helena Hill in the locality of Ewingsdale, two lanes northbound and three southbound, opened on 18 December 2015.
This is a New South Wales pickup with a Queensland drop off, which is exactly what our Queensland licensing allows. We are licensed in Queensland under BHSL 258504 and BEA 260412, and we can collect you in NSW when the journey ends in Queensland. Brisbane Airport is in Queensland, so Suffolk Park to Brisbane Airport is a legal booking for us, as is the return.
Traffic through Byron Bay town is a real factor at this end of the trip. The $24 million Byron Bay bypass opened on 27 February 2021, and the council acknowledged at the time that it was not a silver bullet for congestion. We build the local stretch into the pickup time rather than pretending it does not exist, and we plan the quiet end of the trip, the last few kilometres of village streets, with the same care as the highway.
Weather is the other variable. Tallow Creek is an intermittently closed and open coastal lagoon with a catchment of around 450 hectares that takes in Suffolk Park, and Byron Shire Council has permission to scrape the beach berm at the creek entrance down to 2.4m AHD once water levels reach 2.2m AHD. When it rains hard here it rains hard: in the 24 hours to 9am on 30 March 2022, gauges recorded 319mm at Coopers Shoot, a neighbouring suburb, and 282mm in Byron Bay, and the council said water flowing out of Belongil Creek and Tallow Creek was slowed considerably when the ocean was pushing against it on spring tides. On a wet week we will talk to you about leaving earlier. We would rather you waited at the terminal than watched a flight go without you.
Pickup in Suffolk Park
We collect from residential addresses, holiday houses and accommodation, and we ask for the street number, street name and suburb when you book. Suffolk Park being a suburb of Byron Bay, a confirmed address removes any doubt about where the car should stand.
Addresses worth naming here include Suffolk Beachfront Holiday Park at 143 Alcorn Street, one of two holiday parks owned by Byron Shire Council, with Tallow Beach bordering it; Crystalbrook Byron at 77 to 97 Broken Head Road, with its 92 Rainforest and Treetops suites; Byron Bay Golf Club at 62 Broken Head Road, where the club chose a 193 acre dairy farm in October 1957 and completed the 18 hole course on 6 March 1983; and Suffolk Park Community Hall at 145 Alcorn Street, which Byron Shire Council lists with off street parking and step free access, useful after a function.
Just south, Broken Head Holiday Park at 184 Broken Head Reserve Rd, Broken Head, seven kilometres south of Byron Bay, is another address we can start from. If you are at the Broken Head picnic area in the nature reserve, note that park entry there is $4 per vehicle per hour on tap and pay machines, so it is not a place to have a car idling early.
The village takes its name from George A. Suffolk, 1876 to 1952, who dedicated a large parcel of land to Byron Shire Council for community use on 16 November 1922. Nearby Arakwal National Park was gazetted on 26 October 2001 under an Indigenous Land Use Agreement between the NSW Government and the Bundjalung of Byron Bay Arakwal people, the first national park in Australia created that way, and takes in a 3 km stretch of Tallow Beach.
Families and child seats

The drive is 182 km and takes 128 to 142 minutes. Add your airline's check in cut off on top of that, tell us your flight number and departure time and we will set a pickup time that works back from it, with local traffic allowed for.
Can you legally pick up in Suffolk Park?
Yes, when the drop off is in Queensland. Our Queensland licences let us collect in New South Wales for a trip that ends in Queensland, and Brisbane Airport is in Queensland. We cannot do a New South Wales pickup that also ends in New South Wales.
Can you bring us back from Brisbane Airport?
Yes, that direction is a Queensland pickup and a New South Wales drop off, which is also allowed. We track the flight, so a delay moves the car rather than costing you. International arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting and domestic 45, and your driver meets you inside with a name board rather than texting from a carpark.

Bluesfest runs over the Easter long weekend at the 120 hectare Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, its home since 2010, and organisers said the 2025 festival drew 109,000 patrons. It is a big and entirely predictable weekend for traffic on this corridor, so book early and expect us to suggest an earlier pickup than you would otherwise need.
