The road north
Ocean Shores sits at the southern end of the M1 Pacific Motorway, whose southern terminus is at Brunswick Heads. From there the motorway runs north through Yelgun, past the Tweed, over the border and on to Brisbane. It is a fast, grade separated road for almost the whole distance, and the only three tunnels on it between Brunswick Heads and Brisbane are the Cudgen Road Tunnel at Stotts Creek, the Wilsons Park Tunnel at Banora Point, and the tunnel under the Gold Coast Airport runway.
The part that catches people out is the first five minutes, not the motorway. The exit signed for Ocean Shores is Wilfred Street at Billinudgel, and it is a northbound exit and entrance to the west only. A car coming down from the Gold Coast cannot use it. Southbound traffic comes off further on, at the Gulgan Road interchange at Brunswick Heads, which is the motorway's km 0. The old highway was kept as a local service road between the Brunswick River and Yelgun when the upgrade went through, and Billinudgel is connected by an underpass with left in, left out access at Wilfred Street.
None of that is difficult, but it is the reason a driver who does not know the area arrives late. Brunswick Heads was bypassed in 1998 and Billinudgel in July 2007, so the villages are quiet side stops now rather than places the highway runs through. The last stretch into town is local road, and we build time into the plan for it rather than treating the motorway time as the whole journey.
Why people book a car for this run
There is no passenger train. The last XPT left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004, ending 110 years of rail in the region, the Casino to Murwillumbah line has not reopened, and parts of the corridor are now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.
Ocean Shores is a scheduled stop on the NSW TrainLink North Coast coach, between Brunswick Heads and Billinudgel on a long haul corridor that runs from Casino through Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads to Surfers Paradise. Locally, the bus that actually reaches the town is route 645, Ocean Shores to Byron Bay via Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby, run by Brunswick Valley Coaches in association with Blanch's Bus Company. Route 640 does not serve Ocean Shores at all; its own timetable tells Ocean Shores passengers to change at Mullumbimby. The 645 timetable has Monday to Friday and Saturday columns only.
So the public transport that exists is built around the region, not around a 5am flight out of Brisbane. A booked car leaves from your own driveway at the time your flight actually needs, with your bags in the boot and no connection to miss.
Pickups in Ocean Shores
Ocean Shores had 4,818 residents at the 2021 census, up 12.0% on 2016, and sits in Byron Shire about 24 km north of Byron Bay. It is a hilly place of elevated streets and sea views, and it is cut into pockets by water: the north arm of the Brunswick River weaves through the north of the town, and the Capricornia Canal runs through Ocean Shores North and connects to Yelgun Creek. Two addresses can look close together on a map and still need a long way round. We check the approach before the day rather than on the day.
Most pickups here are private homes on quiet residential streets, and we are happy to come to the door. If you would rather meet somewhere obvious, Ocean Village Shopping Centre on Rajah Road is the town's central meeting place, with its Coles and Target Country, and Ocean Shores Country Club on Orana Road, established in 1972, is the other landmark everybody knows. Streets like Goondooloo Drive, Coomburra Crescent, Wahlooga Way, Yamble Drive and Balemo Drive are all inside our pickup area, as are New Brighton, South Golden Beach and Reflections Brunswick Heads Holiday Park on Fingal Street.
A few things worth mentioning when you book. South Golden Beach has a single takeaway food shop, a volunteer managed community hall and no fuel station in the locality, so we fuel and stop before that turn off, not after it. Byron Shire Council has NSW Public Works repairing the South Golden Beach flood levee on Yelgun Creek between July and November 2026. And the New Brighton Farmers Market runs every Tuesday from 7am at Tom Kendall Oval with more than 30 producers, which is the one regular reason the area is busy on a weekday morning. Families, and the free fitted child seats
Child seats are free on every transfer, and we fit them ourselves before we arrive. You are not carrying a capsule through the terminal, not paying a surcharge for it, and not wrestling with an unfamiliar anchor point in a car park at dawn. Tell us the ages and we bring the right seats.
The sedan takes up to three passengers. The V Class and the Executive Vito Tourer take up to seven, with the seats already fitted, and they have the luggage space a family going overseas actually needs. That is the whole fleet. If you are coming the other way with small children and want somewhere calm to land, Torakina Beach at Brunswick Heads sits inside the breakwater at the mouth of the river, with the surf beach stretching south from it.

Can you pick me up in Ocean Shores and drop me somewhere else in NSW?
No. Our licence allows a NSW pickup only when the drop off is in Queensland. Ocean Shores to Brisbane Airport is fine, and so is Brisbane Airport back to Ocean Shores. Ocean Shores to Byron Bay or Ballina is not something we can do.
Do I need to bring my own child seat?
No. Fitted child seats are included free on every transfer, for every seat that needs one. Just give us the ages when you book.
Can I use the coach or the local bus instead?
You can, and for some trips it is a reasonable option. There is no train at all. The NSW TrainLink North Coast coach stops in Ocean Shores on its long haul route, and the local 645 connects Ocean Shores with Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby and Byron Bay, with Monday to Friday and Saturday columns on its timetable. Neither is built around early flights or a family with luggage, which is why most people on this run book a car.
