The route
Mullumbimby is an inland town. It sits about 4 km west of the Pacific Highway and about 9 km by road from the coast, 5 km west south west of Brunswick Heads and 15 km north west of Byron Bay. So the first part of any airport run is local road, out through town and along Mullumbimby Road toward Gulgan Road, which is the way in and out toward the motorway. There is a reason that pairing feels like a highway: before 9 March 1945 the Pacific Highway ran through Mullumbimby itself, following what are now Gulgan Road and Mullumbimby Road, before it was rerouted through Brunswick Heads.
From there it is motorway north to the border. The stretch between Yelgun and Chinderah is the Yelgun to Chinderah Freeway, 28.5 km, opened on 4 August 2002; the old highway it replaced was renamed Tweed Valley Way. Gold Coast Airport sits on the Queensland,New South Wales border, so the last few minutes are the only part of the drive that is genuinely airport traffic.

When one of those three is slower than usual, a wet morning, a holiday weekend, a queue at the drop off lane, the window absorbs it. We would rather quote a range we can keep than a single number we cannot.
Why a booked car, not a gamble
There is no passenger rail. Mullumbimby railway station opened on 15 May 1894 and closed on 16 May 2004, when the Casino,Murwillumbah line shut and the last XPT left Murwillumbah, ending 110 years of rail in the region. The old station building was severely damaged by fire in the early hours of 22 April 2024. Much of the corridor is now becoming the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, the Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek section is 24 km of sealed and compacted gravel, which is a fine morning out on a bike and no use at all with three suitcases and a 6 am flight.
Public transport in the town is two bus routes: Blanch's route 640, "Mullumbimby to Ballina via Byron Bay, Suffolk Park & Lennox Head", and route 645, "Ocean Shores to Byron Bay via Brunswick Heads & Mullumbimby", operated by Brunswick Valley Coaches. Neither route's description includes Gold Coast Airport.
That leaves driving. Mullumbimby is a small town, 3,589 residents at the 2021 census, postcode 2482, and the road that matters is the one that floods. NSW SES names Coolamon Scenic Drive, Jubilee Avenue, Mullumbimby Road and Saddle Road among the roads around Mullumbimby most prone to flooding. Mullumbimby Road is the town's major evacuation route, carries 13,500 vehicles a day, and a 2024 funding announcement covered reconstructing a section of it near Gulgan Road. At 4.40 m on the Federation Bridge gauge, roads into Mullumbimby become impassable and residents are likely to be isolated; the 2022 flood peaked at 4.98 m. In the hinterland valleys it happens earlier, at 3.50 m Main Arm Road and Left Bank Road are likely to be impassable, and at 3.91 m the Mullumbimby South evacuation route may close at Jubilee Avenue near the golf club, which can isolate Wilsons Creek, Myocum and Mullumbimby Creek.
None of that means your transfer is in doubt. It means the person planning it should be watching conditions rather than assuming the road is the road. Byron Shire Council also has flood restoration works running in Main Arm: minor works from mid September 2026 with causeway replacements to follow, expected complete in October 2027, with traffic control between 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm Saturday. We come to the address. A house up a gravel drive, a rental on the edge of town, the Middle Pub at 46 Burringbar Street on the main street, a farm gate out along Wilsons Creek Road, whatever you give us, that is where the car waits. Byron Shire Council's offices are at 70 Station Street, open Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 4 pm, if that is your morning.
Pickups from outside town work the same way. Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens is at 81 Monet Drive, Montecollum, which shares the 2482 postcode. Reflections Brunswick Heads holiday park is on Fingal Street, Brunswick Heads, a short walk from Torakina Beach and the footbridge. Give us the street address and any gate code or unit number when you book.
