Lennox Head is a seaside village in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, inside the Ballina Shire local government area and sitting between Ballina and Byron Bay, Wikipedia puts it 11 km from Ballina and 20 km from Byron Bay. The drive to Gold Coast Airport is a proper regional run rather than a hop across the border: 105 km, 64 to 74 minutes in normal conditions.

We do that run as a booked private transfer. The pickup is in New South Wales and the drop off is in Queensland, which is the direction our Queensland licence allows. The return, Gold Coast Airport back to Lennox Head, is a Queensland pickup and is also fine. What we cannot do is a New South Wales pickup with a New South Wales drop off, so this is a straight through airport transfer with no side trips down the coast.

What the transfer costs

Fares start at $259 for the Lexus ES300h sedan, which carries up to 3 passengers, and $329 for the seven seat Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, which carry up to 7.

Both are *from* prices and both are per car, not per person. A family of four pays the seven seat fare once, not four times. Tolls, airport fees and GST are included, so the number you agree to at booking is the number you pay. The final price depends on the exact address, the time of day and how much luggage you are moving, which is why we ask for pickup address, passenger count and bag count when you book.

The route we actually drive

From the village, the way out to the highway is Ross Lane. Ballina Shire Council describes it as "an important connection between Lennox Head, Ballina, Tintenbar, Alstonville, Wollongbar and Lismore" and as an important emergency evacuation and detour road, carrying roughly 8,400 vehicles a day. It runs west and meets the upgraded Pacific Highway at the entrance and exit provided near the old Ross Lane entrance, near Tintenbar, about 12 kilometres north west of Ballina.

From there the whole run north is dual carriageway. The Tintenbar to Ewingsdale section, 17 km long and opened on 18 December 2015, carries a 110 km/h limit and includes the twin tube tunnel under St Helena Hill, the only road tunnel on this part of the highway. North of Brunswick Heads the road has been gazetted and signposted as the Pacific Motorway since February 2013, so the signage changes name under you. You are not lost; it is the same road.

The last stretch into the airport is local road rather than motorway, and we plan the timing around that rather than trusting a door to door estimate from a mapping app.

Ross Lane: two things worth knowing in 2026

Ross Lane has a long history of flooding at Deadmans Creek, and Council says it closes several times each year during heavy rainfall. A $4.35 million flood resilience project, $3.9 million from Transport for NSW and about $450,000 from Council, is raising the road to roughly 1.45 metres AHD with a new single span bridge, built to a 20% AEP standard, or once in five years on average. Council is explicit that even then it "is not possible to completely eliminate flooding at this location."

For that work, Ross Lane is closed for approximately nine weeks from 19 October 2026, reopening 18 December 2026. Traffic detours for that period. If your flight falls inside that window, tell us when you book and we will build the detour into the pickup time rather than discovering it on the morning. It is the sort of thing a route planner never sees, and the honest reason we quote a pickup time instead of subtracting drive time from your check in.

Why book a car for this trip

There is no train. Passenger rail in the Northern Rivers ended on 15 May 2004, when the last XPT left Murwillumbah station after 110 years of rail in the region, and two sections of the old corridor are now the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, a shared path, not a line waiting to reopen. The regional bus operator is Northern Rivers Buslines, based in Lismore, but we will not quote you a route number out of Lennox Head because we could not find one published, and an airport departure is the wrong place to gamble on a timetable.

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is much closer, 5 km from the Ballina CBD, on Southern Cross Drive, and is served by Jetstar, QantasLink and Virgin Australia to Sydney and Melbourne. If your flight is one of those, it may suit you better. If you are flying anywhere those services do not reach, Gold Coast Airport is the practical alternative.

Parking is the other factor. Ballina Shire Council states plainly that "Parking is in high demand in the CBD areas of Ballina, Lennox Head and Alstonville," with timed restrictions and officers patrolling on foot and by vehicle using automatic number plate recognition, including weekends. Being dropped at the terminal door avoids all of that at both ends.

Pickup in Lennox Head

We come to the door. That means a house, a holiday rental, or a park such as Reflections Lennox Head on the corner of Ross Street and Pacific Parade, where cabins, tiny homes, glamping tents and campsites all have different access points, tell us which one you are in and we will come to it.

Your driver arrives ahead of the booked time and waits, and you get a message when the car is there. If a large vehicle needs room to turn, or a particular gate is involved, say so at booking and we will allow for it.

Families, and the free fitted child seats

Child seats are free and fitted on every transfer. Not handed over, not left on the seat, fitted before the car reaches you.

We need ages and approximate weights at booking so the right seat is in the car: infant capsule, convertible seat or booster. Tell us at the same time how many bags you are bringing, because prams, surfboards and a week of luggage change which vehicle we send. The sedan takes up to 3 passengers and the V Class and Vito Tourer take up to 7; if the numbers are tight once bags are counted, we would rather put a bigger car on than squeeze you.

Lennox Head is a surf village, a declared National Surfing Reserve with a right hand point break under a 65 metre headland that hang gliders launch from, so board bags are a normal request rather than an unusual one.

Allow 64 to 74 minutes for the 105 km. That is driving time in normal conditions. We set the pickup time by working back from your flight, adding the airline's check in requirement and a margin for the last local stretch, so the pickup we suggest will be earlier than a straight subtraction.

Can you legally pick up in Lennox Head and drop at Gold Coast Airport?

Yes. Our Queensland licence allows a New South Wales pickup when the drop off is in Queensland, which is exactly this trip. What it does not allow is a New South Wales pickup with a New South Wales drop off, so we cannot add a stop in Ballina or Byron Bay on the way, and we cannot run you down the coast as a detour.

Can you bring us back from Gold Coast Airport to Lennox Head?

Yes, that is a Queensland pickup and it is within the licence. We track your flight, so a delay moves the pickup automatically. Your driver meets you inside the terminal with a name board, and wait time is free for 60 minutes on international arrivals and 45 minutes on domestic.

What happens if Ross Lane is closed or flooded?

We plan around it. Ross Lane is scheduled to be closed for around nine weeks from 19 October 2026 to 18 December 2026 for the Deadmans Creek works, and it can close in heavy rain regardless. When conditions look marginal we bring the pickup time forward and tell you why, rather than leaving it to chance.
