Gold Coast to Byron Bay Transfers
How far Byron Bay is, and how long the drive really takes
Central Surfers Paradise to the Byron Bay town centre is about 100 kilometres, 75 minutes on a quiet weekday morning, closer to two hours on a Friday afternoon in January. We quote 75 to 90 minutes because that is what the run honestly takes most of the week, and we pad it when the calendar says to. From Gold Coast Airport it is shorter: the terminal at Bilinga sits about 66 kilometres north of Byron, usually 50 to 60 minutes. You are most of the way to New South Wales by the time you collect your bags.
What the road actually does
South from the Gold Coast you join the M1 Pacific Motorway and run past Burleigh and Palm Beach to the Stewart Road interchange at Currumbin, where the Tugun Bypass begins. That seven kilometre stretch opened in June 2008, is signed at 100, and drops into a 334 metre tunnel directly beneath the Gold Coast Airport runway. Roughly four of those seven kilometres are already in New South Wales, and the state line is marked by a sculpture called Hyphen standing in the median. The bypass ends at the Tweed Heads Bypass just north of Kennedy Drive; from there it is motorway south past Brunswick Heads to the Ewingsdale Road interchange, signposted Byron Bay.
The last few kilometres are the slow part, not the hundred that came before them. So many cars come off at Ewingsdale Road that the queue to exit used to spill back into the southbound lane of the highway. Transport for NSW put traffic signals on the eastern roundabout of that interchange to meter the flow, Byron Bay's first ever traffic lights, switched on in 2021, triggered by sensors when a queue forms. They work, at the cost of holding you at the interchange rather than out on a 100 km/h motorway. Past that comes the hospital roundabout, then the run into town.
Budget the delay at the Byron end, not the motorway.
Every way to make this trip
The train, there isn't one. No passenger train reaches Byron Bay: services on the Casino to Murwillumbah line ceased in May 2004 and nothing replaced them. The only train in town is the solar powered heritage service covering three kilometres between the town centre and North Beach, a ride, not a route. Queensland Rail's Gold Coast line ends at Varsity Lakes, still in Queensland with the whole New South Wales leg beyond it, and that is also where the Airtrain from Brisbane Airport leaves you.
The tram and the go card. G:link's Stage 3 opened on 9 August 2026, taking the tram south to Burleigh Heads, still not a way to leave the state. Your go card covers South East Queensland transport and the Airtrain, and stops working the moment you cross the Tweed.
Coaches and shared shuttles. Long distance coaches run this corridor daily, Greyhound, NSW TrainLink and Premier among them, for somewhere in the region of $30 to $50 a head. They set down at the Byron Bay interchange on Butler Street, west of the old railway station; that moved in April 2021, and plenty of older guides still send people to the former Jonson Street stop. Shared door to door shuttles from Gold Coast Airport usually run around $45 to $60 per person each way, on their schedule with other drop offs ahead of yours.
Unison Transfers does not operate a bus, a shuttle or a shared service. Every booking is a private car with one party in it. For one adult travelling light, a coach seat costs less than our from price, and we will say so plainly.
Driving yourself. If you already have a car, nothing beats it on price, dual carriageway the whole way, no tolls, roughly $15 to $20 of fuel each way. Parking is what people underestimate, and the headland makes the point: the lighthouse car park at Walgun Cape Byron is charged by National Parks at $10 per vehicle per hour, with a maximum of one hour per vehicle per calendar day, annual passholders included. Check current fees, and what your accommodation provides, before assuming a car is the cheap option.
Taxi and rideshare. A metered taxi runs roughly $280 to $380, ask for an estimate first, and expect the driver to raise the empty return leg. Rideshare usually prices lower, around $180 to $300 depending on surge. Getting back is the issue: driver supply in Byron Bay is thin, particularly before dawn. Neither brings a fitted child seat.
What a private transfer costs, and what is in the from price
Gold Coast to Byron Bay starts from $174 in the Lexus ES300h sedan, which carries up to three passengers. That is a from price, per car, not per person, the exact figure depends on your pickup address, because Hope Island is further from Byron than Currumbin is. Gold Coast Airport has one terminal: your driver watches the flight, parks, walks in, and waits inside arrivals with a name board, no pickup bay to find, nobody to phone. From hotels and homes, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh, Palm Beach, Coolangatta, Robina, Hope Island, we come to the lobby or front door and handle the bags. In Byron we drop at the door: town centre, Belongil, Wategos, Suffolk Park, Broken Head, Ewingsdale, Bangalow, Brunswick Heads.
Who this route suits
Families. We fit the child seats, they are free, and the driver installs them before coming to you. Taxis carry long standing exemptions from parts of the child restraint rules; rideshare drivers do not, and are not required to carry a seat at all; coaches are exempt altogether. A private car with the right seat already fitted removes the question, and no competitor on this route markets free fitted seats.
Early flights and late arrivals. Byron Bay to Gold Coast Airport for a 6am departure means leaving around 3:45am, when there is no rideshare supply worth relying on and no coach running. A pre booked car turns up, and on a flight morning that is the whole argument.
Groups. Seven people fit in the V Class or the Vito Tourer; seven plus seven large suitcases do not. Tell us the real luggage count and we will say honestly whether you need one van or two cars.

The hour nobody warns you about
Queensland does not observe daylight saving. New South Wales does, from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, so for those months Byron Bay runs an hour ahead of your Gold Coast hotel, a 7am Queensland time flight is an 8am departure by Byron clocks. We confirm pickup times in the time zone of the pickup address, and say which clock we mean.
