Broken Head is a headland and locality in the Northern Rivers, roughly 9 km south of Cape Byron, the easternmost point of Australia, inside the Byron Shire local government area. At the 2021 census it had a population of 385. It is a small place with a large reserve attached to it, and the sort of destination that rewards having a car booked and waiting rather than worked out on arrival.
We run it as a private chauffeured transfer: 88 km, 54 to 65 minutes, from $235 in the Lexus ES300h sedan (up to 3 passengers) and from $299 in the seven seat Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer (up to 7). Those are from prices per car, not per person. A family of four pays the car price, not four fares.
Gold Coast Airport is in Queensland and Broken Head is in New South Wales. That direction sits well within our licence, a Queensland pickup may drop off in NSW.
The drive south
The Byron Visitor Information Centre describes Gold Coast Airport as 40 minutes from Byron Bay, and Byron Bay itself as sitting just 6 km off the M1 Motorway. Broken Head is further south again and further off the highway, which is why we plan 54 to 65 minutes rather than a flat 40.
Most of the run is motorway and uneventful. The part worth knowing about is the end of it. NSW National Parks' own directions from Byron Bay are simple: drive south on Broken Head Road, turn left into Broken Head Reserve Road, and continue 3 km to the end to reach the picnic area and Broken Head Beach. That final spur is a dead end, not a through road. Byron Shire Council describes Bangalow/Broken Head Road as the "coast road", a route in the south of the Shire linking Byron Bay, Suffolk Park and Broken Head to Lennox Head, and connecting with the M1 at Ballina.
The last stretch is local roads and we plan for it. Council's transport strategy names Broken Head Road as a coastal road that services a small population but experiences significant pressure from visitors, and records traffic counts at Suffolk Park, which a Broken Head transfer passes through, rising between 24% and 29%.
One road we do not use: Seven Mile Beach Road, on the reserve's western boundary. The NPWS plan of management describes it as narrow, winding and unpaved, with speeding, low visibility on bends and illegal roadside parking during peak visitor periods, and states it will not be promoted for vehicle access to the reserve. That is official advice and we take it.
Weather can also have a say. On 30 March 2022, Byron Shire Council reported that a landslip at Broken Head Road had been cleared by emergency services that afternoon, and advised drivers to take care in the area. One documented event is not a pattern, but a single coastal road in and out is worth respecting in heavy rain.
What the price covers, and what it does not
Tolls, airport fees and GST are included in the fare, quoted per car as a from price before you book.
One charge sits outside our price because it is not ours: NSW National Parks charges a park entry fee of $4 per vehicle per hour at Broken Head, paid by tap and pay card or phone at the pay machines. Those fees were introduced at the day use area in 2012, with revenue directed back to management of the reserve. If your drop off is inside the reserve, that is a third party fee separate from the transfer price. Ask us when you book and we will tell you whether it applies to your address.
Why a booked private car suits this trip
There is no rail anywhere near Broken Head, and it is not a recent gap. The last XPT train left Murwillumbah station on 15 May 2004, ending 110 years of rail transport in the region, and the line was formally closed on 23 September 2020 to allow construction of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. No trains run direct to Byron Bay from north or south.
Buses get close, but not all the way. Blanch's route 640 runs Ballina to Mullumbimby via Lennox Head, Suffolk Park and Byron Bay, and its southernmost Byron side timetabled stops are "Suffolk Park, Clifford St" and "Opp. Byron Holiday Park, Broken Head Rd". The timetable lists no stop at Broken Head itself or at the nature reserve. The last few kilometres are yours to solve, usually with luggage, usually after a flight.
A pre booked car removes that problem: one vehicle, one price, door to door, with a driver who already knows which road the drop off is on.
At the airport
We track your flight, so a delay changes our arrival time rather than your plan. Your driver meets you inside the terminal with a name board, not a text message from a car park. Free waiting is 60 minutes on international arrivals and 45 minutes on domestic, which covers the usual baggage and border queues without a clock running. What is at the other end
Broken Head Nature Reserve totals 110 hectares, sits seven kilometres south of Byron Bay township, takes in 3.5 kilometres of coastline and is co managed by NPWS and the Arakwal People.
The day use area at the end of Broken Head Reserve Road has toilets, showers and barbecues, and parking for 86 vehicles, with three beach access tracks down to Broken Head Beach, one including a viewing platform. Broken Head Holiday Park, at 184 Broken Head Reserve Rd, is an in holding within the reserve, administered by the Arakwal people after being passed to their control by the NSW Crown Lands Department in 2009. Lifeguards patrol the beach during the Christmas school holidays. Offshore, the Three Sisters, previously known as Cocked Hat Rocks, are gazetted as an Aboriginal Place.
