Broken Head Road in the dark, and then 180 kilometres north
Most Broken Head runs to Brisbane Airport start before the birds do. The car comes down Broken Head Road, past the turn down to the nature reserve and the holiday park, and stops in a driveway where the only other light is a sensor lamp over the garage. Five minutes later you are through Suffolk Park, and the working part of the drive begins.
From Broken Head we run north on Broken Head Road through Suffolk Park, then pick up Bangalow Road and head inland. That keeps the car out of Byron town altogether, no crawl down Jonson Street, no 50 zone that nobody needs at 3am. Bangalow Road carries through to Bangalow and the Hinterland Way on ramp, and from there it is the Pacific Motorway the whole way: Brunswick Heads, Billinudgel, Chinderah, then Tweed Heads and the border. North of the Tweed the M1 runs on through Nerang, Helensvale, Yatala, Loganholme and Springwood to Eight Mile Plains, where the Gateway Motorway branches north, over the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, then Moreton Drive and Airport Drive into the terminals.
The road distance is about 180 kilometres door to kerb, and at four in the morning the drive is a little over two hours. It does not stay that way. From around 6.30am the stretch through Springwood and Rochedale South thickens up, and school holidays or a single incident on the Logan run can add more again. We plan against the slow number, not the fast one.
What the trip costs
Broken Head to Brisbane Airport is from $399 in the Lexus ES300h sedan, which carries up to three passengers, and from $505 in the seven seat Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer. Those are per car, not per person, and they are from prices: the exact figure follows the pickup address, because a house at the Suffolk Park end of Broken Head Road is a different job from one down on Seven Mile Beach Road.
What the quote already covers is worth saying plainly, because it is where quotes usually diverge. Tolls are in it, and on this run there is exactly one toll point, the Murarrie gantry on the Gateway where you cross the river, because every kilometre of motorway from the Hinterland Way to Eight Mile Plains is free. Airport fees are in it. GST is in it. Child seats are in it. There is no deposit to pay when you book, and you can cancel at any time for free.
Why this trip in particular wants a booked car
Broken Head is a short list of roads, a nature reserve and a surf break. That is the charm of it, and it is also why the alternatives for making a Brisbane flight are so poor.
There is no train. Byron Bay's station has had no regular service since the Casino to Murwillumbah line closed in 2004, and the only train on that track now is a solar powered tourist service running about three kilometres between the old station and North Beach, nowhere near Brisbane. The nearest station you can actually catch a Brisbane train from is Casino, around 80 kilometres inland and over an hour away in the wrong direction.
The long distance coaches north pick up at the Butler Street interchange in Byron Bay, which means getting yourself and the bags eight and a half kilometres up Broken Head Road first, at an hour when nothing is moving. A rideshare at 3am in a pocket with no standing drivers is a gamble taken with a non refundable airfare. A hire car means somebody drives two hours on no sleep and then walks the terminal looking for the return bays.
A train or a coach can get you into the region, and if that suits you, take it. Neither one can get you off Broken Head Road at 3am. We are not a coach operator and never have been: this is a private car that comes to your address, carries your group and nobody else's, and goes straight to your terminal.
The licence question, answered straight
Broken Head is in New South Wales and Brisbane Airport is in Queensland, and that combination is exactly what makes this trip legal work for us. Our Queensland accreditation (BHSL 258504, BEA 260412) allows a New South Wales pickup when the drop off is in Queensland. This run finishes in Queensland, so we can do it.
We spell that out because travellers in the Northern Rivers villages are used to being told no. The reverse, a trip that starts and finishes in New South Wales, is not permitted, and we do not offer it. Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and anywhere else with a Queensland drop off, we can.
Pickup at a Broken Head address
Addresses out here are their own small problem. It is a short list of roads, Broken Head Road, Seven Mile Beach Road, Broken Head Reserve Road, with houses set back behind trees and numbers that are genuinely hard to read in the dark. Give us the street address plus a dropped pin when you book, and the listing name for the house if it has one; that is usually what the neighbours know it by.
If you are thinking of meeting the car at the reserve car park instead, to spare the driver your driveway, please don't. That is National Parks pay by the hour parking at the end of the reserve road, with nothing else around it at 3am. We would much rather come to the door.
The driver arrives ahead of time and waits quietly. No horn at 3am; if there is no light on we call rather than knock. If the drive is too tight or too soft to turn a seven seater in, the driver parks on the road and walks up for the bags. Surfboards, board bags and golf clubs travel fine in the V Class, tell us what is coming and the right car turns up.
Coming home: Brisbane Airport arrivals
On the return leg we track your flight, so an early arrival or a two hour delay is our problem rather than yours. The driver parks and meets you inside the terminal with a name board, not a text message from a pickup zone. You get 60 minutes of free waiting on international arrivals and 45 on domestic, measured from touchdown, which covers a slow bag belt and a long queue at biosecurity. Then it is the same road in reverse, and most people are asleep before Yatala.

Plan to be at the terminal by 5am, which means a pickup around 2.30am. It feels brutal, but the road is empty at that hour and the drive is at its quickest. For an 8am international departure we would collect you around 3.30am, which has you checked in by 6am with the morning build up into Brisbane already allowed for.
Is it really legal for a Queensland operator to pick us up at Broken Head?
Yes, because the trip ends in Queensland. Our accreditation permits a New South Wales pickup with a Queensland drop off. A trip that starts and finishes in New South Wales is not permitted, and we do not offer it.
