Brisbane to Byron Bay: how far, how long, and which option suits you
It is about 175 km from Brisbane to Byron Bay, and a private car covers it in 125 to 140 minutes. The spread is a Tuesday mid morning run versus a Friday at knock off.

The route, and the exit people miss
From Brisbane Airport you run south on the Gateway Motorway and join the Pacific Motorway (M1); from a CBD or South Bank hotel you join it closer to town. Then the long middle, motorway through Logan and the Gold Coast to the border at Tweed Heads, where the M1 passes under the southern end of Gold Coast Airport's main runway, which genuinely straddles the state line. South of the border it is dual carriageway the whole way, past Chinderah and the Brunswick Heads turnoff, to the Ewingsdale Road exit.
Two things about that last part catch out drivers who do not know it.
Ewingsdale Road is the last exit before the St Helena Tunnel. The twin 434 metre tunnels under St Helena Hill opened in December 2015 and sit *south* of the Ewingsdale interchange, between Byron and the Bangalow exit. Coming down from Brisbane you turn off before them. If you see the tunnel portals you have passed the turn, and the next chance to correct it is Bangalow.
The Ewingsdale roundabout is the real bottleneck, not the highway. Queues from it were backing up onto the motorway, which is why traffic signals went in on the eastern approach, Byron Bay's first set of traffic lights. In January and on long weekends that short run into town can take longer than the twenty kilometres of motorway before it.
From there the Butler Street bypass, open since 2021, runs from the Shirley Street roundabout along Butler Street, over the old rail line, to Browning Street and the southern end of Jonson Street. A car heading for Suffolk Park or Broken Head never has to enter the town centre. A driver who has not been here before usually does anyway.
Every way to make this trip
Private transfer
One car, door to door, no changes. A driver meets you inside the terminal with a name board, carries the bags and drives to the address you gave us. Those are per car from prices, not per person fares, and the figure depends on the pickup point.
The honest case against it: for one or two people travelling light on a flexible schedule, a coach ticket costs far less. We would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
Train
There is no train to Byron Bay. Passenger services on the Casino,Murwillumbah line ceased in May 2004, and the track through town now carries the Byron Bay Train, a three kilometre solar powered service between the town centre and the North Beach precinct. Lovely. Not transport from Brisbane.
Rail gets you part of the way. Airtrain runs from both Brisbane Airport terminals, about 25 minutes to the city, every 15 minutes at peak and 30 off peak, from $23.30 one way to Brisbane city stations. Children up to and including 14 travel free with a paying adult, but only on the airport to city leg. Services continue to Gold Coast stations as far as Varsity Lakes, and there the network stops, you still need a coach or a car for the rest, luggage in hand through every change.
Coach
Greyhound Australia, NSW TrainLink and Premier Motor Services all serve Byron Bay, setting down at the interchange on Butler Street, just west of the old railway station and a short walk from Jonson Street. For a solo traveller on a budget it is the sensible choice. It takes several hours because of the stops, and runs to a timetable rather than to your flight.
To be clear: we do not run a coach, a bus or a shuttle, and never have. Our fleet is one Lexus sedan and two seven seat Mercedes people movers, every job private. If a coach suits you better, take the coach.
Shared shuttle
Other operators run shared door to door services into Byron: you pay per seat, wait for the vehicle to fill, then sit through other drop offs before your own.
Drive yourself
Easy and well signposted, motorway almost the whole way. Budget a little over two hours in clear conditions and closer to three leaving Brisbane in the afternoon peak. The costs catch people at the ends: tolls out of Brisbane, which hire companies pass on with an administration fee, and parking at the Byron end. If your accommodation has no car space, ask before you book.
Taxi and rideshare
Technically possible, practically unreliable. A metered taxi is a long haul fare and drivers may quote for the empty return leg. Rideshare is the bigger gamble: a Queensland accredited driver may drop you in New South Wales but cannot legally pick up a fare there, so long cross border requests are often declined.

Child seats matter more here than on a ten minute airport hop, it is over two hours in the car. Coaches do not carry them, rideshare drivers rarely do, and hire companies rent them by the day and leave you to fit them.

At both Brisbane terminals your driver waits in arrivals with a name board, and the waiting is free. We also collect from Brisbane hotels and the cruise terminal.
In Byron we go to the door: Jonson Street and the town centre, Wategos, Suffolk Park, Broken Head, Ewingsdale and Bangalow. Narrow driveways are normal here, and a driver who has been to the address knows which ones to reverse into.

Is there a train from Brisbane to Byron Bay?
No. Passenger services on the line through Byron ended in May 2004, and the only train on it now is the three kilometre solar train inside the town. Airtrain and the Gold Coast line reach Varsity Lakes; after that you need a coach or a car.
Can you collect us in Byron Bay for the trip back?
Yes, Byron Bay to Brisbane, Brisbane Airport or the Gold Coast is the same job in reverse, including pre dawn runs for early flights. Between October and April, yes. New South Wales observes daylight saving and Queensland does not, so Byron Bay runs an hour ahead of Brisbane in those months, which catches people out on the return leg.
