The headland between Ballina and Lennox Head

Skennars Head is the green shoulder of land on The Coast Road between East Ballina and Lennox Head, seven kilometres out of Ballina, with the Pacific on your left the whole way in. If you have booked a house here you already know the markers: the Sharpes Beach car park, Boulder Beach and Boulder South below it, Flat Rock at the southern end, and the schools up on the ridge. If you have never been, it is easy to miss on a map, a handful of streets off a clifftop road, a surf break, and a long view north to Lennox Head itself.

From Brisbane Airport it is about 190 kilometres. Here is what the run involves, what it costs, and why the last half hour matters more than the first two hours.

The road: Gateway, M1, Ross Lane, then the coast

Out of the terminal we take Airport Drive onto the Gateway Motorway southbound, over the bridge and down the eastern side of Brisbane to join the Pacific Motorway near Eight Mile Plains. From there it is the M1 south through Logan, past the Gold Coast exits, through the Tugun tunnel and over the border at Tweed Heads.

South of the Tweed it stays motorway, Chinderah, Brunswick Heads, the Byron Bay interchange at Ewingsdale, then the St Helena tunnel a few minutes further on. Dual carriageway the whole way, no main streets, none of the crawling through country towns people remember from years ago.

Then comes the part that belongs to this address and no other. There is no Skennars Head exit. The motorway runs well inland of this coast, so we come off at Ross Lane, cut east on Byron Bay Road, and join The Coast Road at the Lennox Head end, then run south along the clifftop into the village. It is a short leg on the map and a slow one in practice: a chain of roundabouts, and then house numbers on a road where half the houses sit below you.

Realistic timing: plan on two and a half hours

Two and a half hours is the honest planning figure. A clear midday run can do it in about two hours twenty. A 4:30pm departure from the airport will not, the Gateway and the Loganholme merge are slow at that hour, and three hours is the sensible allowance. Through Christmas and Easter the M1 south of the border carries every car in south east Queensland heading for Byron and Ballina, and we build the buffer in rather than hope.

Going the other way, for a departing flight, we work back from your check in time and collect in the dark if the schedule needs it. A half past three pickup on The Coast Road for an early international out of Brisbane is an ordinary booking here, not a special request.

What it costs

A Brisbane Airport to Skennars Head transfer starts from $385 in the Lexus ES300h sedan, which carries up to three passengers with luggage, and from $489 in the seven seat Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, which carries up to seven.

Both are from prices for the whole car, not a rate per person. They start from those figures because the run is not identical for every address: a house tucked in behind Sharpes Beach is a different last kilometre from one on the Ross Lane side of the village.

The honest case for a booked car out here

Public transport to Skennars Head barely exists, and there is no polite way to dress that up. There is no railway anywhere near this stretch of coast: the branch line that once ran to Ballina lost its passenger service back in 1943, and the last passenger train in the wider region left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004. Long distance coaches from Brisbane set you down in Ballina or Byron Bay, not on the headland, which leaves you arranging a second trip at the end of the first one.

Rideshare is a gamble. A two and a half hour one way run across the state border is not what most airport drivers want, and one who accepts it can cancel while you are standing at the kerb with your bags. A hire car means a one way drop fee and driving the M1 yourself after a long haul flight.

To be clear about what we are: one booking, one car, your bags in the boot. No shared vehicle, no other passengers, no circuit around the village to collect strangers.

Pickups at the house, and meeting you at arrivals

Holiday house addresses around Skennars Head are the genuinely tricky part of this job. The Coast Road runs along the top of the headland and a great many of the houses sit below it, so driveways drop away steeply off the road, numbers end up painted on a rock or a post behind a hedge, and some places share an access track between several properties with a turning area that is really a garden bed. Send the address when you book, plus a dropped pin if the listing gave you one. A pin beats a street number at two in the morning.

One local timing note worth having: Skennars Head has two schools on it, Xavier Catholic College on College Avenue and Holy Family Catholic Primary on Isabella Drive, and both of them feed onto The Coast Road. A mid afternoon pickup on a school day is not the same road as a mid morning one, and we allow for that rather than discover it.

Boards are worth mentioning at booking: a bag or two rides fine in the seven seater alongside luggage, a full quiver of longboards is better discussed in advance.

Coming the other way, your flight is tracked from wherever it took off. Your driver parks, walks in, and waits at arrivals with a name board, no kerbside circling, no phone calls while you hunt for a pickup bay. A delay simply moves the pickup.

Travelling with children

Every child seat we carry is free and stays free: baby capsule, rear facing, forward facing and booster. The driver fits and checks them before leaving for your address, so they are in and correct when the car pulls up, not being wrestled into place on a footpath while you watch the clock.

We say this loudly because nobody else here does. On competitors' pages the child seat is an add on with a per seat charge, a request that may or may not be honoured, or it is not mentioned at all; a hire car desk charges per seat per day and hands you the seat to fit yourself. Can you find our holiday house if the driveway is hidden?

Yes, provided you send the address at booking. Plenty of houses here sit below the road behind hedges with no visible number, on steep or shared driveways. Your driver checks the approach beforehand and, where one is too tight, meets you at the top of it rather than blocking The Coast Road.

Do you charge extra for child seats?

Never, on any booking. Capsules, rear facing, forward facing and booster seats are free and fitted by your driver before pickup. Give us the ages of the children when you book.

Can you take us from Skennars Head to Ballina Byron Gateway Airport?

No. That would be a New South Wales pickup with a New South Wales drop off, which our Queensland licence does not permit. We can take you to Brisbane Airport or Gold Coast Airport, and bring you home from either.
