The drive, honestly described

Pottsville is a long run, and the map undersells it. From the Brisbane Airport terminals to the middle of town is about 140 km, and very nearly all of it is one road. The car leaves the terminal precinct, picks up the Gateway Motorway within a couple of minutes, and stays on the M1 from there: roughly 20 km of Gateway, then about 110 km of the Pacific Motorway heading south. Dual carriageway the whole way.

Allow somewhere between an hour and forty minutes and two hours, door to door. Almost all of the variability sits in the first third, the Gateway to M1 merge, and the Logan stretch, which can be slow from mid afternoon onwards. South of the border the road empties out and the last half hour is easy.

Then comes the part that catches people out, and the reason we ask for a street address rather than a town name. Pottsville does not have a motorway exit named for it. You leave the M1 at the Cudgera Creek Road off ramp, run about two kilometres east on Cudgera Creek Road, and then join Pottsville Road for the last two kilometres in. You arrive from inland, from the west, not down the coast. Those final four kilometres are ordinary two lane country road, and at eleven at night they are unlit and there is nothing on them.

Pottsville Road turns into Coronation Avenue at the town end. Both carry Route 38, the same route number that Tweed Coast Road carries up the coast, and Coronation Avenue is effectively the spine of the town, most local addresses get described in relation to it.

There is a second way in, and it costs nothing to ask for. Instead of the last stretch of motorway, the car comes down Tweed Coast Road through Casuarina, past Norries Headland at Cabarita Beach, over Cudgera Creek at Hastings Point, and into Pottsville from the north. It is a slower road than the motorway, so allow a little more time. Tell your driver when you book. It is a change of route, not a string of extra stops.

What it costs, per car

A Brisbane Airport to Pottsville transfer starts from $315 in the Lexus ES300h sedan, which carries up to three passengers, and from $399 in the seven seat Mercedes, either the V Class or the Executive Vito Tourer, both seating up to seven. Why this run in particular rewards booking ahead

Getting from Brisbane Airport to Pottsville under your own steam is genuinely awkward, and it is worth being straight about the alternatives.

There is a train from the airport, but the line ends at Varsity Lakes, still around 50 km short of Pottsville, roughly forty minutes of driving on the far side, with your bags. From there you are into a regional bus timetable built around schools and local trips, with a connection along the way and a walk at the end of it. People do it. It is a long afternoon.

Rideshare is not much better. Pottsville sits out at the edge of the network, drivers know the return leg is an empty one, so the app quotes high and acceptance at eleven at night is a coin toss. A car that is already booked, at a known from price, already tracking your flight, takes the question away entirely.

Holiday houses, and the driveways that come with them

A good share of our Pottsville work is holiday rentals, and the geography here does not help a driver who has never been.

Pottsville is boxed in between two creek mouths, Cudgera Creek at Hastings Point to the north, and Mooball Creek at the southern end of town. The result is a settlement that runs long and narrow along the coast, with Coronation Avenue doing most of the work and the residential streets hanging off it. If you want a bearing on the place, Wollumbin sits about 28 km inland, almost due west of Coronation Avenue, and the water is a short walk east.

So give us the full street address, not "Pottsville", and add anything you already know is awkward: "the drive is steep, park on the street", "it is the second gate, not the first", "the key safe is on the pool fence". The driver reads it before he leaves Brisbane, not while idling outside at midnight.

Early departures are the other half of the work. Pottsville to Brisbane Airport for a 6am flight means a pickup somewhere around 3am, and yes, we do them. A New South Wales pickup is fine when the journey ends in Queensland, which a run to Brisbane Airport always does. The driver arrives quietly, no horn, no headlights swinging across the neighbours' windows.
