The Border That Changes Time
If you're flying into Gold Coast Airport (OOL) and travelling 30 minutes south to Byron Bay between early October and early April, you cross a one-hour time-zone gap on the drive. Queensland does not observe daylight saving — New South Wales does. Get this wrong and you could miss your driver, miss your flight, or arrive at your wedding venue an hour off-script.
When the Time Difference Applies
- Early October → first Sunday of April: NSW = AEDT (UTC+11). QLD stays at AEST (UTC+10). NSW is 1 hour ahead of QLD.
- First Sunday of April → first Sunday of October: NSW = AEST. QLD = AEST. Same time at the border.
The exact dates shift each year — check Australian Daylight Saving dates before you travel.
What This Means For Your Booking
When you book a transfer with us, we always quote pickup time in the time zone of the pickup address. So:
- Booking from Byron Bay (NSW) to Gold Coast Airport (QLD) in summer: the time you give us is NSW (Byron) time. We will arrive at your door at exactly that NSW time. The drive is one hour at most, but because QLD is one hour behind, you'll arrive at OOL roughly the same wall-clock time you left Byron — just a different time zone.
- Booking from Gold Coast Airport (QLD) to Byron Bay (NSW) in summer: the time you give us is QLD (Gold Coast) time, set to the QLD wall clock. Your driver meets your flight on QLD time. Once you cross the border, the wall clock jumps forward an hour to match NSW.
Common Mistakes Travellers Make
1. Booking a 6:00 AM flight from BNK in summer and assuming "wake up at 4:30": if your transfer is from Byron, you need to be ready at 4:30 NSW time. That's only 3:30 in QLD — but it's still 4:30 on your phone if your phone is on Byron / NSW time.
2. Setting your phone to "automatic time" and arriving in Coolangatta: your phone may auto-switch to Brisbane time as it picks up the QLD tower. If you're meeting a Byron driver, that confusion costs you 60 minutes.
3. Wedding ceremony at a Byron venue, transfers booked from a Gold Coast hotel: in summer, the venue runs on NSW time and the hotel runs on QLD time. Always confirm pickup in NSW time for Byron weddings, not QLD time.
How We Handle It
Every Unison Transfers booking confirmation states the pickup time in the time zone of the pickup address. The driver's vehicle clock is set to that same time zone. We'll send you an SMS reminder 24 hours before pickup with the same time. If you ever feel uncertain, call 0401 605 940 and we'll confirm in both zones.

When Travelling, Use The Departing Airport Time
- Flying from BNE or OOL (QLD): use QLD time on your phone for departure planning.
- Flying from BNK (NSW): use NSW time.
- In doubt: check the time zone in the airport's IATA code — OOL and BNE are QLD, BNK is NSW.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does my driver use NSW or QLD time?
A: Always the time zone of the pickup address.
Q: Will my driver wait if I'm an hour late because I confused the zones?
A: For airport pickups, we live-track your flight and adjust automatically — no charge. For non-airport pickups, the first 15 minutes are complimentary, then our hourly rate applies. If you realise the mistake, call 0401 605 940 immediately and we'll work the run.
Q: Why doesn't Queensland do daylight saving?
A: It's been put to QLD voters twice (1971 and 1992), rejected both times. Northern QLD towns don't benefit from extending evening daylight in summer.
Q: Do flights operate on the airport's time zone?
A: Yes — every airline schedule is published in the local airport time. A 6:00 AM departure from BNK is 6:00 AM NSW time, regardless of where you're transferring from.
